Hey Doug! There are lots of people doing "Urban Homesteading" as a start.

I used to live in the city, and finally sold my house and move to the country. We now live in a forest that was once a farm back in the 1860's.

How do you want to start? Garden? Small animals - rabbits perhaps? Rabbits are a great source of food and are quiet.

What's your thoughts?

Well even though I'm right in the urban core of Seattle I have container gardens out back. The area used to be a parking lot but could not hold the space of cars so I got on the HOA board and made a garden. I also have chameleons, a dog, lots of bird feeders, birdhouses, and a bird bath. Would love to get rabbits and bees but don't think my neighbors would like that.

And how could I forget! The Rocky! My dog who loves chasing wild rabbits.

If you want bees simply for pollinators... look into "Mason Bees". A lot of people have them when they can't have honey bees. The hives are much smaller and are not an issue in the community.
