so I'm paying someone on upwork to do some artworks for me - now here's the thing, the last time I used upwork was in ~2020.

Five years later, I am using the service again to get a designer to do some artworks for the play store. She's making decent work, but it costs be $50.

Now in comparison, the banner is not that great because when I look at the AI image generated for free by ChatGPT, which I did a week prior to hiring her, and (used as a reference guideline) I realise that yeah, maybe I don't need these designers anymore and the work quality of AI generation is actually, at a basic level really really good.

I got a really high quality banner artwork from GPT for free, so why pay humans anymore?

You're right plus with the arrival of AI created graphics, chances are that you'll hire someone who will use AI to create the images they'll charge you for.

I'd rather pay the prompt engineer than the designer - even for 'custom' work

I can feel my designer friends weeping ๐Ÿ˜ญ , but I understand your position

The cunnundrum lies in the fact that you're always gonna be able to as AI for as many iterations as you want until you reach the one that caters to your taste.

In the case of the human however, paying a mere $50, you can't really expect them to work an enourmous amount of hours and versions, so you'll get something that may not be what you want, and with no option of iterations.

But, if we all go in this direction, a very high percentage of artistic works will be delegated to the machines, since what it will deliver will always be good enough

I think where the balance lies currently is getting a designer to design the mock ups for the AI, then the AI uses that as it's basis of design.

But to be honest, I just prompted GPT and it gave me high quality off the bat, I was so shook I thanked it for it's service

That's one reason I give a fuck you to ai.

As a gd I understand the pain since I was successful from 2000-2018 when ai & stable diffusion came out. Everyday I was getting phone calls losing clients went from $10k a week to $0 in 3 weeks. So if you're paying a designer it's just because you appreciate them. But truthfully ai killed the need for graphic designers. Now we all have to evolve from designer to programmer because now today graphic design is. How do I make all these plugins work & I need to learn the talking language.

I imagine like the rest of different industries if graphic designers somehow manage to adapt to survive the shift it would be like video games. The price goes up & you get the same shit. But it wouldn't because if it did go like that then the same chick your paying $50 for that banner would probably charge $250 for the same exact thing just because they need to spend more time working the plugins to produce exactly what you want the way you want.

This is why I don't think the gd for individuals will survive. At that point the consumers would probably rather learn sd themselves or find a friend then pay $250 for a banner for your business.

Wait until all these people figure out firebase and replit; no more hiring someone to build a website for your business.

Man, I hear you! Itโ€™s wild how far AI has come since 2020. If ChatGPTโ€™s spitting out high-quality banners for free, itโ€™s tempting to just lean into that and skip the human designers altogether. Iโ€™d say it depends on what youโ€™re aiming forโ€”AIโ€™s great for quick, solid basics, but sometimes a human can add that unique flair or tweak things in ways AI might not nail yet, especially if you need something super specific or polished. Maybe try using the AI art as a base and see if the designer can elevate it for a lower cost? That way, youโ€™re blending the best of both worlds without breaking the bank.

For many the issue is copyright and being able to use AI generated work.

Need to calculate prices in Monero or Bitcoin.

because GPT does not need the money to feed his family
