Might have had something to do with the formula generations? My grandmother talks about being given a shot after my mom and uncle were born to dry up her milk. I think she had been a formula baby as well. If that's what "everyone" was doing, it was what doctors and "The Science" (TM) of the day said to do, maybe the wetnurse place died out? There's probably all sorts of red tape preventing it now.
