I've also been thinking about this for reposts and I think it makes sense to group reposts and group replies under the note they are replying to.
The only issue is then the timeline would not be strictly chronological. which isn't really and issue but right now all the code presumes everything is shorted by date
I guess what I would want from a reply would be that it is clearly shows dependency on the parent note.
In the current view, the parent note is displayed the way I would expect if I was quoting it, not replying to it.
In the proposed view, the parent note is removed, making the reply a sad orphan.
New version is definitely an improvement. 🫡
