In my opinion this is a bad tradeoff. Can users do anything to make it less aggressive? I would wait a few minutes before using the app if it meant this wasn't going to happen.

How much lag are you seeing between messages? Loading should be really fast these days. It's practically unnoticeable. And when it loads, there are animations to expand of reposition each note, image or video.
