Borrowed a manure spreader to fertilize winter pasture

Each winter we setup a long term paddock for the sheep on the weakest pasture. In the past, we have planted turnips in the paddock as winter feed to extend the grazing season.

This year we are spreading horse manure on the pasture thanks to our neighbor lending us his tractor and spreader. The pasture is about acre and it took about 5 loads to get full coverage.

Instead of plowing or discing the field to get it ready for planting the winter seed mix, we are trying to over graze the pasture with our rams and horses. Then we will broadcast seed, hopefully in the rain.

Sheep Winter Paddock Update

We tried using our horses and rams to over graze the winter paddock to prepare it for seeding but they weren't creating the impact we needed quickly enough.

We decided to put the rams back in the woods and bring in the flock of sheep for a couple days to speed things up.

Then we managed to broadcast turnip, rape and oats in the rain and it has been raining regularly after seeding too.

Germination looks good but I'm getting the feeling the grass will compete with the young crops more than we would like.

Even if the winter feed crop doesn't grow well our efforts will still have greatly improved this pasture for next grazing season.
