Chickens are an essential part of the homestead, whether urban or rural. Instead of turning food scraps into stinky fly-breeding trash, they make eggs and compost.

Do they eat the plates and tissues too, WTF πŸ˜‚

Paper plates and paper towels break down over time and incorporate into the compost

Ah I see, but doesn't it take a long time, years maybe?

We have to recycle paper in an extra bin where I live πŸ˜…

Honestly not long at all, maybe a week or two, a month at most for cardboard. The chickens tear the paper apart when they scratch, then the microbiology in the coop floor and soil break it down the rest of the way. Small bits of paper and cardboard are great additions to chicken coop bedding since they are high in carbon. Good question!

Chickens are cool 😎

Can’t wait to get my chickens!
