when you have a default reference implementation of Bitcoin

is actually blanket vote for Core to do whatever they want.

Having just one reference implementation of Bitcoin is a weak link that has worked up until now because trust was upheld.

When the social contract (not respecting the Bitcoin community's wishes) is broken this is no longer the case.

Lol, well, that is kinda relevant

Because we are sort of all trusting someone with a better understanding in this thing.

And even if you don’t understand EVERYTHING, you can understand, and see, how that trust is managed.
