Pros: Frictionless, no fee transfers, private within the mint, bearer asset can be transferred p2p off network any way text can be transferred.
Cons: Custodial, must trust the mint not to rug, easy to lose if not stored safely.
I can’t help but look at it as a simple way to break chain surveillance, unless I’m missing something.
What about those taproots, trampolines and blinded paths. Will those not solve LNs problems? Do we need layer 3? I'm fumb, just asking
I don’t think it’s a layer 3 to scale lightning. I think of it as a special tool for specific purpose use. Like if you go into a specific marketplace, you peg in your Lightning sats and are issued anonymous ecash equal to that amount. Now you spend your ecash in the marketplace completely privately. Nobody knows what you did. You peg out whatever you have left when you leave.

Word. It make me think about stuff too… you can send sats to someone over text, email, DMs, whatever. No on chain tx, no LN tx… possibilities.

I was just thinking about this, it makes sending bitcoin via text and other out-of-band transfers much easier than lightning. If you think about it, I could literally text someone some cashu and say they now hold some bitcoin. We aren't talking about hardware wallets and coinjoin and everything else, zero technical expertise or setup required.
As far as orange pilling goes, I could just drop some of this in slack to a coworker, I could text some to my dad, I could put some on fliers and pass them out. That's fucking cool.
