Thinking about buying a nice PC and using it to run a full node, lightning, and nostr relay.

Is this a bad idea if I also want to use it for other purposes?

considering a start 9 server but I also want to play around with video editing, AI, and 3D printing.

Get a nice computer for your fun stuff, run start9 in virtual box πŸ€™ just be aware that to use your node and lightning node the nice computer will need to be on all the time. Also make sure you have tons of RAM

i'm running bitcoin core on my old previous workhorse lenovo laptop, my new rig was so cheap i had to get it, i was expecting to pay a lot more for it (polish based china pc builder called Primux) - so now i have a node running again :D

er, to answer the question, bad idea. separate computer is 10000x better

the bitcoin node needs to stay on all the time and same with lightning, better to use a laptop and get a UPS and mobile network failover for your router then you can really run a reliable LN node

laptops do have a benefit in that they are very low power but very cheap on the second hand market, so, better to just buy a second hand laptop for the job imo, doesn't have to be very nice, 200 plus another 100 for a 1tb ssd

I bought one of those refurbished Lenovo Mini PCs to use as a home server for things like that. So long as it's multicore, it can run lots of different services. I still haven't migrated everything I wanted to set up on mine yet.

And I have a separate nice pc with a good gpu to play with the things that need it. Things like solidworks and davinci and 3d printing are why I still keep a dual boot windows install handy.

Sounds like a great idea to me! I would love to do this, it seems like a no brainer if you have the capabilities and funds (which both hold me back currently πŸ˜‚) But I want to get there hopefully within the next 1-3 yrs. Keep us posted how it goes if you end up pulling the trigger!

This made me think of another set up I heard today. While I was shoveling snow, I was listening to nostr:npub1s5yq6wadwrxde4lhfs56gn64hwzuhnfa6r9mj476r5s4hkunzgzqrs6q7z’s podcast Bitcoin Fundamentals and he had a fella with a full HVAC and water heater system set up, running off the energy produced by the Bitcoin mining set up he had! Sounded absolutely genius. I would love to do your idea AND that set up eventually. Maybe eventually be the crazy guy who turns his entire garage into a full BTC workhouse πŸ˜‚ with PC’s and basics and oil heating pipe and fans running all over the place πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Yea he started a company called Nakamoto Heating Solutions πŸ˜‚ LOVE IT!

I recommend a dedicated devices. Both physically and virtually.

In case you’re interested in something small, I can teach you a bit:
