Hi folks,

Earlier today I had a really nice chat with Jana about decentralised social media, self-moderation, the balance between free speech and moderation, and how to handle misinformation online and in society in general.

Since Jana is new to Nostr, it was also a chance to talk about how it differs from platforms like Mastodon and Bluesky.

She asked me whether other Nostr users might be interested in participating in her study, so I’m sharing her call below. If you have 30-40 minutes for an interview, here’s a great opportunity to contribute to research on a space that’s dear to many Nostriches.

----

We from the University of Bamberg (Germany) are conducting an academic study on decentralized social media (e.g., Mastodon, Hive, Lemmy, Bluesky or others) and how misinformation is addressed on these platforms. We are looking for participants for a 30–40 minute online interview. All information will be treated confidentially and used solely for academic research purposes.

Interview Focus:

- How users perceive and respond to misinformation on decentralized platforms

- The role of community governance and incentive systems in tackling misinformatiom

How did Lemmy and Hive get mentioned, but no sign of NOSTR? 😂

Not sure 🤣. I know that ActivityPub stuff tends to be popular (well, as far as decentralised social media can be considered "popular") in Germany. Or at least a lot of German posts make it to my timeline. I'm not familiar with Hive myself.

I've actually heard of ActivityPub. I had to Google the others 😂

The problem with academic studies is they always want to research the most boring and least significant thing imaginable, "misinformation" 😞

The power of NOSTR with its keypair instead of accounts and running across decentralised, self hosted relays, and zaps, none of that's interesting at all 😂 😂 😂

Researchers are actually all over the new stuff all the time, but starting a project on it is very difficult because of all the bureaucracy and begging involved for funding

Nostr will fix this, eventually. I think.

You can just do research.

Exactly. Research for plebs funded by plebs.

Plebs have been exceptionally bad at funding me so far, not gonna lie 🤣🤣. But yes, hopefully one day!

Sure, but, there are only dozens of us. We can only fund so much.

I wish I had your optimism. But looking at any trending or top-zapped feed contradicts this view. People open their wallets based on likeability, popularity, their mood, or how much they agree with someone’s take. To be fair, this is not a critique of Nostr. FOSS development is a bit like theatre: very few people will ever make money from it.

As a species, we’re not that great at the whole V4V thing. As much as I’d love to be proven wrong, I think that humanity is not there yet.

No, I disagree in that we aren't good at v4v with fiat ruining inventive structures, at this point, almost unknowingly.

And I don't pay attention to the big zappers. They are in a fart-sniffing circlejerk. If you aren't in that club, you aren't in that club.

Thanks for the Zap nostr:npub1qdsjkr46urkg6vqrr3zqhgy8l7dazc5k9hlm5jmwqg0vft7hzgtqamgfw3! (And I swear that I wasn't angling at extracting anyone's sats with the the phrase above :). Given how much you helped with the Primal stuff you should be getting some sars yourself).

thanks for maintaining the project. i hope to contributing when life gets left hectic

If only I had $$$ for lab equipment so I could just do research

I got more sats for sharing a post about a possible job opportunity than for releasing software used by over 10% of Nostr relays (assuming nostr.watch numbers are correct). So yeahp, we’re still very far from “V4V”-funded R&D. But the fact that I even get to read some research papers shared by other Nostriches is already a net positive. Given some of the stuff that passes as content here, I’m just glad we’re not in a totally science-sceptical environment. Not gonna lie, that was my initial impression, considering all the anti-vaccination talk, carnivorous diet with bars of butter and other trending content on Nostr.

The V4V R&D model strikes me as just a different form of gofundme campaigns. Just not the same vision, time preference or scale for most fields of research.

GoFundMe campaigns are more effective. You rarely walk away from a campaign without raising at least £200. Still, not enough for even the most basic R&D, and certainly not enough for anyone to make a living.

Lemmy is also ActivityPub-based and the original call was on Mastodon, so that may explain the connection :).

I mentioned what I could about Nostr given the scope of the interview. One way or another, if Nostr makes it into a study with key phrases like decentralised social media, it could attract further interest from researchers in Information Systems, Computer Science, and related fields. Or not 🤣... But I might just be on the weird side that actually enjoys contributing to this kind of thing.

I would love to contribute if it was an open discussion where they could actually listen to what I was saying and the direction I was taking them in, instead of asking me closed, irrelevant questions.

Not sure if giving details about the process helps, but my interview was a mix of directed questions (it is a study with a defined scope after all), along with plenty of time and leeway to elaborate on my thoughts. I was also asked if I had anything to add, and we ended with a more unstructured conversation where I mostly spoke about Nostr. Not exactly a Nostr Podcast / Conference environment or a free for all conversation. But it wasn't bad either.

I don't think you'll get zapped for your time, but if you want to change the course of German academia for ever, this might be interesting 👇

Email? Ugh... I definitely would like to participate but nostr has spoiled me.

I sent them a link to this post. I can’t say what levels of accommodation are considered acceptable. I had a Google Meet call and was asked if I would give my consent to be recorded.

Google.

Studying decentralized tech using... Google.

Naw... That's a hard no for me.

There are way better FOSS alternatives, even not on nostr.

What’s misinformation?

So the study is conducted according to this definition?

You would have to ask the folks running the study. I admit I haven’t asked what their definition of misinformation is (which, in retrospect, I should have).

Okay, thanks.
