Is there some sort of backup tool for your own notes?
Discussion
I think iris.to has this feature.
Umbrel has a relay that you can connect to to backup your notes
And with some clients you can 'push all' your data to it. I guess also your previous notes.
Start9 Embassy has a relay you can install and use to capture your own notes.
Any idea how much disc space you need?
How do you restore it?
Love that tools like this exist, I have no intention of running a relay in the immediate future, but I'd be willing to pay some sats for this service.
Would be cool if Start9 or umbrel relays would keep everything & had the option to broadcast to certain relays, sort of mirroring your stuff to the network.
That way you could have fewer relays on mobile & more relays on a more powerful home device

Run a private relay on your umbrel :)
Copy+Paste!
As others have said, the best solution here is to run a private relay. This allows you to backup your notes and events, but also puts you in control of your data. At some point in the future, you'd be able to broadcast your notes and events to other relays so that your followers can view your content. It's anti-rug technology.
Is there a preferred relay people are running? I see there are quite a few implementations.
Wouldn't it make sense for relays to charge extra for long term storage?
Yes, but a relay can always rug you. If you backup your own data, you're in charge.
That's the same trust model as for everything else. The payments could be tiered or even usage dependent, and one can always use multiple relays to have redundancy. But sure - if you run your own relay, even better for you.
I run a backup relay on Umbrel, but the iris.io has a feature to create back up files on device
