Sounds like he's lying to you. Bitcoin is currently on fire and that fact won't change until Core30 is recalled, and Core 30.1 adds the spam filters back.
I've talked to Antoine in private, it was very productive. Not getting in details, but I think the bridges are being built, the interest in listening to users is there, and hopefully we can all do better.
Time to lower the temperature, everyone have different preferences with a shared rigid system.

You said bitcoin only works if non technical people run nodes. I'm not so sure. If the majority of technical people involved support a consensus rule change that automatically and only becomes active as signalled by miners then why woulnt it work? BIP-9
