1. What do you think alien film could be like?

2. What are some different stylistic and technical turns the art could have taken historically that would have led to a different style and "lexicon" of film than we have today?

I haven't studied film formally, but my sense of how it developed as an art form is that unlike visual art and storytelling conventions, which developed slowly in countless different ways around the world, film was pretty global and developed conventions quickly. It also seems there has been a lot of experimentation, but that this stayed in the avant-garde fringes a lot of the time (my guess is because it wasn't very psychologically accessible).

I wonder how many of these conventions are really based on how we as human beings interpret the kind of information we get from film, and how many of them are the consequence of how quickly film as an art form spread around the world and how prolifically it was developed by only a few centers.
