Would it have been better if Satoshi just went “Fuck that, we use the patented Schnorr signatures instead of ECDSA .. tf they wanna do? Sue us?”

Devs would probably have to be even shadowier super coders in the beginning but it would have been another example of Bitcoin’s power.

It was a logical conservatism, as well as the patent, I suspect. ECDSA had already been deployed on the internet for a while by then. Worth noting that bitcoind originally had an openssl dependency because of this, which it took years to get rid of.

Not downplaying the patent though, it was indeed the root cause of all the mess.

And if he was 100% conservative, why choose secp256k1 and not secp256r1? That's not easy to explain.
