Trying to understand something…

If you use DuckDuckGo to visit a .onion link, is your traffic going over Tor or clearnet? (Assuming no onion routing vpn is in use, etc).

DuckDuckGo is a search engine, you have to use tor browser or brave or something to access onion links. Clicking .onion links on your regular browser won’t work as it won’t be able to resolve the link.

DuckDuckGo supports onion links though. So I’m trying to understand whether the traffic is automatically routed over Tor just by using an onion link, or if using the Tor browser itself is required for privacy in this case

Tor links will only work if you are using tor network. Otherwise the address will not be found by your browser.

Okay, got it sorted. I was able to access an onion link on DuckDuckGo but only when using Orbot Tor VPN

Thanks yall

I interpret this as the Tor browser does 2 functions: web browser resolving onion URLs and onion routing.

Your VPN is now doing the onion routing and the duck duck go browser is resolving the onion URLs.

That’s a great way of explaining it. Thank you!

Yes, DuckDuckGo shows onion links in search results. However, you’ll still need a browser that understands what they are in order to access such links.

Accessed it running DuckDuckGo over Orbot on mobile - guess it required that layer because when I disabled Orbot vpn, DuckDuckGo could no longer reach the onion site

Yep this is the answer! .onion is its own internet effectively, much the same as #nostr is it’s own network

It feels like nostr is still based too much on the clearnet's centralized DNS system

Centralized is not the first word that comes to mind if I think about DNS, having some options over tor would be nice though

nostr:npub1l2vyh47mk2p0qlsku7hg0vn29faehy9hy34ygaclpn66ukqp3afqutajft and I discussed ways around this a few months ago. He’s working on every layer to make #nostr successful

Pablo, can you elaborate on how we can avoid DNS/Domains being a choke point?

Reminding you of how you clone your websites to run anywhere that we discussed
