🧡 First Draft for the Nostr Doc Story Line:

Hook | Social Media is broken

- Explain how Social Media is impairing people’s lifes:

- addiction

- anxiety

Context | Problems of Social Media / Dopamine

- Modern companies exploit human’s deeply rooted reward system by putting it on steroids

- manipulation through algos triggering dopmamine receptors

--> designed to stimulate our emotions in order to maximize profits

Progression | Nostrica 2023

1. Travel / Reflecting on Social Media positives

- conference fully organised by social media

- meeting friends we all know from social media

- you tend to forget the flipside of this coin (lol)

2. Social Media business Model

- companies make money through user data

- algorithms work to keep users engaged and addicted

- The incentives are wrong - not about providing real value anymore

3. Censorship Problem

- Lack of transparency

- Free speech?

- Political biases

4. Technical Problems:

- client, protocol, and hosting — single point of failure all in all

- email example for normies to understand

- Nostr fixes this

With all of those problems i would like to start with showcasing the problem and then how nostr is approaching it differently.

Still tons of work to do. But this it today's work. What do you think?

Discussion

if you haven't considered it yet, maybe add a piece on the problem with actual (government) identity verification in common social media platforms and hoe it excludes certain ppl (e. g. ppl w the need to stay anonymous / use tor onion services)

probably most fitting under 3 or 4

*how

This is really good.

Just some thoughts, if I may:

Social media, what do these definitions really mean?

Social: Of or relating to human society and its modes of organization.

Media = plural of medium

Medium: An intervening substance through which something else is transmitted or carried on.

The way I see social media is that it's a way of expression and interaction with others online. Often these platforms are constructed in a way to imitate human interactions in the meatspace.

It has things in common with the meatspace, but also differences.

In common: visual, hearing, talking, emotions to a certain extent and money.

Only in meatspace: smelling, tasting, sensing, body language, more intuition involved.

This means that social media is limited compared to meatspace interaction. But still valuable, we saw that during lockdowns.

Etiquettes are in both interactions required. At social media are some made into the app protocol, others are common practices by users. These are different on each platform and we can see that they can make huge difference.

Etiquettes are nothing more than a set of rules that people chose to engage in to have something happen together in a orderly fashion. That goes both in the meatspace and on social media.

Today, it's more than evident that freedom of expression on social media is at danger. Past 3 years more users were starting to self censor themselves on social media in order to not loose their account.

Too much censorship means that people move over time to other platforms that are letting them express themselves as they wish. If there's a demand for that, they will get developed, nostr is a good example of that.

It's like the adoption of bitcoin, the people now on nostr are the innovators, after that comes the early adopters, the mayority adopters and the late adopters.

Maybe this adds something, maybe not. But if so, feel free to use it.

You're doing a great job! 😉
