i mean just look at Singapore and Brunei. Singapore used to be part of us. Brunei nearly become part of Malaysia. and those two progress better than us now.
Brunei has oil. Australia has gold, coal, rare earths and iron ore. If they run out, they have nothing.
Malaysia refines Australian rare earth minerals. Not because the technology is secret or anything, but because we would need to pay far too much to our politicians to get permission to do it here.

Malaysian politicians might not be as good as Singapore's, but they are still not as stupid as some. At least in economic matters.

But the difference between Malaysia and Australia is how high up you need to be before you can start demanding bribes.
In Malaysia, even a traffic cop can demand bribes. In Australia you need to be a city mayor at least. Singapore, you need to be a cabinet minister!
