Thanks for letting me keep my sats. I’ll tell you this to make you feel better in exchange since I’m apparently playing the UK nearly exclusively against you guys.

I suck at sports, mostly ignored them throughout life; but, about eight years ago, I started watching sports that no one else does here in my neck of the world. I wanted to go into sports as a spectator and figure out the rules by watching.

It started with darts. Blew my mind that there’s people having a better time getting drunk and proudly giving up there job to be in attendance for Worlds Dart Championships. Makes the Super Bowl even lamer. 🎶Oooooooooone hundred and eeeeeighhttyy🎶

Now I’ve seen about 4 full cricket matches and I still don’t know what the wickets mean compared to the run count.

When ball hit wickets the batter is out. New batter until none left then teams switch places.

The lap count is the score.

Nobody knows how cricket works. They swing about for hours until boredom sets in, pretty sure.

Thats cool though.

Was never a huge athlete or sports fan, but played some here and there, always respected them. Sports at any level, if you're trying to get better and playing a well matched opponent, is the best way to get into "flow state" there is imo

You are correct. In cricket, one side hits the ball until they get bored, and then the other side does the same, and whoever is least bored by the end of their turn wins

Makes sense to me

What makes less sense is that I've heard sumo cricket is a type of cricket bat, not a different game

Was not aware of that.

Sumo is another odd sport. One think I'd dig if I understood it better. Apparently there's a pasty rising star from Ukraine taking it by storm

Do they get a lot of chances to practice their sumo wrestling in Ukraine? 🤔

Heard about it on No Agenda. No clue, but they did speculate there was a bit of politics in his recent win, even if he is good

What if sumo wrestling is all politics and scripted just like American wrestling 😱

Will make a great documentary on Netflix.

Funnily enough, I've had baseball explained to me on more than one occasion but I'm still like, nope🤷🏻‍♂️.

Baseball has one of the more complex rule sets out there, I've been told.

The basics are reasonably easy to understand...but I suppose still pretty complex now that I think about it lol

Well there we are then.

Your baseball is our cricket🥳.

Yeah a large baseball and cricket fanbase never seem to coexist in the same country from what I’ve noticed, but all in all they seem very similar.

It’s nothing too crazy hard I didn’t think. But American Football… now there’s some nonsense rules and they are constantly updating them too. I don’t even try.

Baseball players always seem like the least athletic people just standing around chewing gum, wearing jewelry, but fuck man can they throw and jump high when the time comes. And pitching a baseball professionally is some crazy stuff to see in slow-mo.

Don’t like watching it most of the time except seeing someone grow increasingly nervous when pitching a perfect game: that’s the most beautiful, nerve racking thing in baseball.

I'm not really into American Football but I remember watching the Super Bowl many many years ago, the game was stopped by the referee for "Unnecessary roughness" which I found absolutely hilarious😂😂.

There are 11 batsmen, once 10 are out, that's the innings over (As one man can't bat on his own). There are 2 innings per side. You add up the scores of both innings. The one with the most runs, wins. If one team scores less than 200 runs in their 1st innings than the other side, the other team can make them bat again. You can also draw a match, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the scores are tied. You can be given out if you fail to get to the wicket within 2 minutes of the previous batsman being dismissed. Some fielding positions include "Cow Corner", "Silly Point" and "Fine Leg". There are a multitude of other eccentricities within the game but I'll just drip feed them to you slowly so as to avoid confusion. Clear🤔?

I learned ... something from this.

I played a game in a park once with some Indians I was with. Used a weighted tennis ball instead of dangerous rock ball normally used.

I was at bat for like 10 whole minutes. Racking up points without really knowing what I was doing. I decided to go for a "home run" and really swing for the fences instead of hitting grounders constantly, though that seemed to be working well.

Ball goes sailing high, guy catches it easily, I'm out. Stupid game

Yes, you're most definitely out if someone catches the ball. You can also be out if you're clean bowled, lbw (Leg before wicket), handling the ball or run out.

Just lame that I should have stuck with hitting grounders forever. I knew it was risky to go for the big swing, but dribbling grounders got boring

Yes that clears up quite a bit! Thank you 🙏

Good summary! 🏏
