Last month I had to put down my Border Collie due to kidney failure.

My 12 year old Australian has had surgery on both back legs, has a sore front leg and is going blind.

The other day I took her to the afterbay and as she was getting out of the car she missed the step and went down hard. She was hovering her left rear.

I managed to get a cancellation appointment the next day. The vet was somber.

She might have torn the repair loose, pain management is only so effective.

We all knew what this meant.

I took her home so my wife could say goodbye.

I spent the day, night and next morning carrying her around where she’d normally go herself.

With the Border Collie is was a hard but easy call. She had stopped eating and drinking, was getting lethargic, wasn’t herself.

But the Aussie was alert, hungry, showing all will to be a dog but was in a lot of pain.

Such a hard call.
