I just wipe the surface of the candle with a dedicated plastic (non scratch) scourer & rinse off.
Go lightly.
Eventually you'll wear through the wall of the ceramic & need to replace.
I'm only filtering rain water so not concerned with fluoride. Not dead yet.
I'm using a Royal Dalton system & filters. I understand them to be comparable to Berkeley's. I also may have a couple of spares.
