Subnostr

Had a guest on my interview show last night talking about social media for small business. Had a great chat but one exchange struck me.

We were talking "new" social media options and she mentioned she is on Bluesky. I perked up and threw Nostr out there and how excited I was about how great it is to see all of the content posted. Not just what the platform finds appropriate or profitable and she agreed.

Her reply makes me wonder if that is what she also actually wants. She said something down the line of....when we see stuff we don't like over there we say Hey that's not the type of thing we do here.

I said I like it on Nostr where I just decide not to see what I don't like, and let people post whatever they want. It could have been an interesting conversation at a different time or setting.

Curate your own feed folks. See what you want, block what you want, but don't censor what someone wants to say. If you are allowed to stop someone else from posting what you don't like, what happens when someone doesn't like you..... The Sword Cuts Both Ways.

I think it's quite difficult for small businesses to do well with nostr at it's present state.

Social media like Instagram, Facebook, etc helps small business grow by reaching intended untapped audiences but without an algorithm to guide new customers into finding them, it is really difficult.

Nostr is good for small businesses to maintain and connect with their existing customer base though. I think the connection on Nostr is much more authentic and intimate. Partially because of its small size and "early internet" feels and partially because of the immediacy and direct nature of zaps.

I have noticed the opposite. I think I have gotten more orders here, and more interaction on what I’m making and selling. Facebook has its plus side but here I know I’m not being shadowbanned by that other page who paid money to be promoted. I’m being seen by people that have chosen to follow me.

I think it depends on the business. Your niche is the majority of the audience that's on Nostr right now. That's working in your favor.
