They follow, then unfollow, then follow again at a later date, on an automated schedule, to keep showing up in your notifications.

You'll only notice it in clients that notify you when someone follows you, like Primal.
Indeed, Amethyst has no such notification -- though I bet it gets damned annoying!! 👀
