Building your own dwelling is something everyone in the world except kings in castles experienced in their lives at least once. It is a core part of being human, like making and wielding tools, decorating our bodies and improvising language, a creative activity that is part of our form and being. And nobody does it anymore. We pay some guys to slap together some generic structure according to laws. We are all missing something fundamental. I intend to experience it and understand the feelings, of having to get up and do the work, of wishing it was done, of finally having it, of knowing every detail and having things the way I want them, of decorating and improving the little things as I live inside.

My grandpa built his own house, and it was an amazing house, on a lake, surrounded by national park because he built it before the state stole the land to make a park. Its gone though... After he passed away, the new owners burnt it down in an insurance fraud and then built an ugly mcMansion

Too small, and it wasn't literally on the water
I bet he could tell you every detail, even ones you couldn't see. Decisions he made in the process that he would've done differently that you don't even notice, that he lived with and accepted every day. I hope to experience it soon.
