Every android phone I’ve had has had serious problems even with customs roms
I'm having a seriously problem-free experience with GrapheneOS. It's simply security-hardened/de-Googled AOSP, not sure if that's considered a "custom ROM"
it has optional compatability layers for as much Google as you might want, including Play Store.
a warning though: RCS texts do NOT seem to work
