Had a blast harvesting wild Ruffed Grouse with my mate.

He got amazing results cooking them a few different ways over our trip.

There are no grouse where I live without travelling an hour outside town.

This all got me thinking about other birds…. Specifically pigeons.

I’ve heard good things about pigeon meat. But want to avoid city pigeons.

Does anyone have experience with attracting pigeons to their backyard and starting a little ‘coup’ to harvest I’m a sustainable way?

Going to start seriously looking into this I think.

they can be kept in cages just like chickens except obviously they can fly so you have to put a roof on it

you just feed tham seeds, not sure what they like best, probably stuff like wheet and millet and such

catching them isn't hard, they are pretty dumb, you could just attract them throwing breadcrumbs or seed on the ground and make a net... i saw a dude, while i was in the central prison in Sofia, use a piece of light fishing line with a loop and just put some stuff to bring the pigeon down near it and when it got its feet in the middle he pulled it and voila, pigeon's feet were snagged, that's probably more fiddly and patience but very easy, just a simple snare

they are really dumb birds, really

the males are easy to identify because they have more shiny plumage and they strut around cooing at the females, just get a few of each, don't eat these first ones, put little bracelets on their feet so you don't forget which ones, and let them breed and feed on good food and the next generation will be perfect for eating

it's a very greasy meat, and it doesn't taste that bad, it just sorta looks a bit mucky, quite grey and greasy, also the texture is a little soft, maybe a bit similar to catfish in this way, but not as bad as catfish

Interesting. Thank you!

I have 30 or so ‘street’ pigeons that hang around and eat my neighbors feed. So I’m off to a head start.

What I had in my head is to let the feral birds be free and just ‘lure’ them into my backyard to get used to feeding there.

Though I don’t know the legalities of this method in my area, although I did read once they are considered pests and not regulated in most of North America.

yeah, they are very tough and fertile animals, at zero risk of extinction... here in the rugged mountains of Madeira they are the second only to the hawks or eagles or whatever they are for the height they fly at but they fly up there a lot more hard style... the eagles ride the wind but the pigeons just work so hard ot get up there

You trap or shoot em?

Bagged 75% with a 22 🫡

We used to catch them in big nets with long handles in farmers’ hay lofts, stick them in a cage and take them live to the Italian farmers market to sell. Some nights we would get as many as 20. Can’t say I’ve eaten one, but I would.

Grouse. Are you landed gentry🤔😳😂.

Haha. Just a good ‘ol Canadian boy here

I'm just a piss taking Brit😬.

I’ll have you over for Amish Butter fried Grouse. You can be as glib or flippant as you want with me 👊

Excellent Sir, "Flippant" was a word that used to appear on my school reports many many years ago. Glib is also an excellent descriptive, I like you. Have a follow🤝🏻.

Just need nostr:npub1ng8zqsa04gzk5y4ch0nh43xrrpwqu27ydvf24s2cdzg5gv3upc7qycqjc0 at the table and we’ll have a full blown donnybrook

I'm not quite sure he's ready for me, he has idea's and delusions of grandeur, way above his station. Still, I'd be willing to iron it all out over a dinner table, replete with grouse and a bottle of Scotch or two🤷🏻‍♂️.

I’ll get the bird ready!

I can hear the foil being taped on.

I'll await Sats McDonald's reply, he's FIAT.

He won't reply though, he'll have muted me.

Give him a nudge for me please nostr:nprofile1qqst4t762m3chjvqgaak6katmyh4v4wtkfky9jrfnphh8s3kjm8mtlcpzfmhxue69uhkummnw3ezua3sdshxjmcpz3mhxue69uhhyetvv9ujumn0wd68ytnzvuq3gamnwvaz7tmhda6zuemfwf5kumewdaexwqejzr2 and tell him from me, he's an absolute quilt.

As requested ….

Think I found your 2nd more evil half

That fuckin guy. Some can’t handle that I’m just better than them. Superior.

I avoid time waste.

Weirdly, You just reminded me that I need to tape my stick & add some clear to my bag. Thx.

😘

You two were made for each other

He thinks, egregiously, he has more intellect, has greater witticisms, than I, he doesn't🤷🏻‍♂️, he's not Oscar fucking Wilde, he's just some bum hick🤗.

Always a pleasure my dude.

I’ll expect you at the round table in due time

The cunt needs to man-up and unmute me. Let's debate🤷🏻‍♂️.

🤔

Shit-house😬😂. Tough guy hockey player hmmm🤔.

My wife puts out homemade suet in cages near the windows and it attracts birds and squirrels. (My son loves to cull the squirrels though we dont eat them, they dont go to waste)

🧡🍻👊🏻

Just make sure to wash the cages EVERY time you add seed. The feeders spread bird viruses. (Birds don’t naturally feed in the same place)

F ya dude!

This may be my answer.

Thank you for sharing!!!

They have squirrel proof ones too if you don’t have a teen with a pellet gun.
