- would running Debian or Ubuntu in a VM on Win11 OS be a more ideal solution?

I’m more familiar with Ubuntu, but I’ve read up on Debian being more FOSS leaning.

My stack is Debian.

I suggest a Debian base + proxmox install. Then virtualize ubuntu if needed/wanted.

Very cool. Debian seems to be the one I’m gonna go with.

Tyvm! 🤘🫂

I shill #proxmox regularly. Big fan of virtualization for efficient/controlled resource use. It’s a level up for administering a homelab.

I haven’t heard of proxmox, but in the midst of building a slim homelab - I’m definitely going to look into it. I’ve been wanting to try more reliable virtualization but haven’t had the time to dive in.

Thanks again for this starting point, it’s really a big help. Can’t wait to tinker.

Debian is a more stable. Out is what Ubuntu (and many other) distros is built on. It isn't bleeding edge, it is a solid foundation which others rely. You will probably feel comfortable with it if you know Ubuntu.

Tyvm! That was my initial impression, so I think I will give Debian a try. I’ve been really curious about it but really never had a reason to play with it since I had Ubuntu machines. Good to know there’s no steep learning curve.

Ty again!

Either should work fine to be honest, don't let not using Debian before put you off - if you install it with Gnome its basically the same as Ubuntu, if you're using CLI only - its essentially exactly the same.

If you're literally running as a home server - VM on Windows is fine as long as the host is on when you need it, that said RPi4 is good and I've got two at home running various containers - but then maybe you wanna do other things with it. :-)

Tyvm! I might try Debian just to see something different. Only thing I remember having issues with in the past with VMs was the networking, but I’d imagine it wouldn’t be so much of a problem now.

I love the RPi4 but the OS I was running on it was fairly unstable - I’m def gonna put it to good use.
