had a Chinese friend who spoke really good Japanese who moved there for work. my understanding is that japanese are very polite on the surface level, but to actually be accepted into the culture is very very difficult.

if you just speak English everyone is going to assume you're just there for fun, just a euro or American playboy

this is correct.

the first few years are just learning to live in Japan. but the longer you live there the more you understand they would feel more comfortable if you just left.

you're never accepted.

I think it would be the similar result if the conditions were reversed. Or, is only the japan special?
