I’m no electrician or mechanic, but I’m fairly certain the power generated from the alternator is due to the spinning of the motor. The pulleys/belts spin and create the energy. So the energy is coming from the potential energy of the motor that is already spinning.

In other words, the alternator isn’t tapping into the fuel source, it’s using the energy created from something that is already spinning.

Your analogy would be like saying that the power created from a water mill needs to use extra water to create the power. Thats not the case. The water is already flowing. The mill is just capturing the potential energy.

oh yeah, burning fuel

it's not as cheap as off peak electricity in your house, i guarantee it, it took a lot more energy to get it into your fuel tank than the trainloads of coal going to the power plant and the installation of the grid is mostly a one time cost that makes up for the line loss and transformer loss

The alternator resists spinning (otherwise you'd have free infinite energy)

so some of the fuel that could have been spent spinning the tires is instead spent spinning the alternator
