I agree, and yet there are entire ages where populations are brought up "Christian" without ever being drawn into Christ.

Note that saying Christ's name is not enough. You also have to do his will. Faith without works is evidence of a dead faith.

We can decieve ourselves about our faith. The regenerate are regenerated.
