I noticed that my Apple TV cuts to a screen saver and shuts off the stream if left unattended too long.

Awesome. This is a great idea, but realistically, I wonder how long it will last before Apple removes it? Apple won't like the streams of pirated content and NSFW content. Android is the better path forward.
This brings up another question... Short of just plugging in a Raspberry pi and using the TV as a "dumb" monitor, are there any efforts towards creating an "open source" SmartTV?
