Well, my 04 Tahoe finally gave out on me. Mechanic said that I'd just be throwing money away to have it fixed.

Are you sure he isn't saying that because of the weird perception of value people have?
For example, vehicle is valued at 2k, but it will cost 2.5k to fix. Therefore, you should spend a lot more on a different vehicle. Just something to question. There could be many things wrong or he may not know exactly which can cost a lot. I'm just putting it out there. I've seen this happen a lot.
