Mamdani is a Shia, who appears to be trying to play into the post 1979 Khomeinist revolution inspired crowd. The Shia have traditionally, been ambivalent towards the mosque. Especially because it was built by the Umayyad dynasty.
For the Shia, their holy sites lie elsewhere.
