Yes, it works like that, an extension add functionality to a browser and, by definition, a browser can open any website, that's why it works like that.
I own Android devices but I think that you should be able to zap through this:
I actually connected my Alby wallet to the android app, "Blue Wallet" and use it from my phone to zap since it's where I do everything.
For browser extensions, they usually needs access to a page and it's an all or nothing, you're free to tweak the settings to whitelist which sites you want after installing it.
Everytime I search for some new NIPs specifications I get a list of blurred images in the results... 👀
