Anyone else have to pick up other people’s trash out of your yard every single day? I do 😒

Originally introduced in 1920 by The Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA-ACL) to represent thier organization, the Pan-African or Afro-American flag has come to represent tremendously more over the decades, including general use in the black nationalist and Black Liberation movements of the mid-20th century, as as a general symbol of black pride all over the world.

It has inspired several other flags, including the African-American flag (1990), which I also included in this post.

Journalist Charles Mowbray White has stated that the creator of the flag proposed the color scheme to represent: "red because of sympathy for the 'Reds of the world', and the Green their sympathy for the Irish in their fight for freedom, and the Black [for] the Negro."

According to the UNIA more recently, the colors of the flag represent:

Red: the blood that unites all people of Black African ancestry, and the blood shed for liberation

Black: black people whose existence as a nation, though not a nation-state, is affirmed by the existence of the flag

Green: the abundant natural wealth in Africa.

The Juneteenth flag was created in 1997 for the Juneteenth holiday in the U.S. The date on the flag was added in 2007 and represents that of General Order No. 3 issued in Galveston, Texas in 1865, making them the final slaves to be freed in the United States.

In the center of the flag is a bursting star representing freedom. Running through the center of the flag is an arc that is meant to symbolize the new horizon of opportunity for the newly freed men and for black people in general. It is also believed that the arc representing the horizon is blue above and red below to be symbolic of the ground soaked with blood; the blood which was shed by the African American slaves for the United States. The red, white, and blue colors were also meant to convey the message that all enslaved people and their descendants are American.

Part 16 of my #Pride #vexillology series: Bear Brotherhood

The International Bear Brotherhood Flag, also known as the bear flag, is a pride flag designed in 1995 to represent the bear subculture within the gay community.

In this context, a bear is a larger and often hairier man who projects an image of rugged masculinity. Though not necessarily referring to human skin color or hair color, the colors of the flag were chosen with inclusion in mind.

Don’t trust people who have repeatedly proven themselves untrustworthy.

Most people don’t trust politicians, but y’all trust media? Teachers? Cops? Doctors?

Ok guys this is one I’ve been excited about posting for a while, as it is one I personally fly with a lot of dignity.

Part 15 of my #Pride #vexillology series: Polyamory

Designed in 1995, the polyamorous flag represents all of us who have the natural ability to love multiple people simultaneously. This love is not lessened or limited by having multiple partners. For polyamorous people, love is not a finite resource, and having a deep, meaningful connection with one partner does not cut off our ability to potentially have the same type of relationship with other people.

Symbolically, the flag contains the following:

blue = openness & honesty among all partners in multiple relationships.

red = love, passion, and desire.

black = solidarity with people “in the closet”, who have to hide their relationships from the outside world.

In the center, the Greek letter pi represents two things:

1. The first letter of polyamory

2. It references the mathematical symbol, an irrational number whose value is known to be infinite. This is an acknowledgment of the infinite relationship possibilities in ethical non-monogamy.

There is much debate among the polyamorous community about the flag, as many people find it jarring or just outright ugly. I personally don’t hate it, but I understand why people do. There have been many variants created in recent years, but my personal favorite pays serious homage to the original, with a slight change to the symbol in the center. I have included it here.
