Really wanna watch the #F1 live at 5am but after waking up at 4am for the #rwc2023 final this morning to see a beautiful victory, I think I’ll need to catch up some sleep!

Excited to watch the replay in my lunch break.

Internet Freedom

I’ve been thinking (for the last 10minutes) about the next step for the Internet. A free internet. Not the web. The actual network that the web and other tech runs on, the internet.

Right now we’re dependent on government or corporation provided/regulated infrastructure in terms of routing of wired networks or cell networks for mobile.

I’m sure there are emerging alternatives that I don’t know of and started this post to ask this awesome #nostr community to share their knowledge and educate me please.

How do we see the future of decentralized internet infrastructure?

Some things I thought briefly of:

(1) a WiFi-based infra that connects us p2p and doesn’t need to go through censored terrestrial infra (for the most part). Problems are that although wifi is getting fast, it’s nowhere near fiber speeds and it has a huge reach/range problem - we’d need big and uniform adoption.

(2) satellite.. what’s the situation now? Latency is worse, but throughout is fine IIRC. We can set up dishes but we can’t send up our own satellites so it seems infeasible as a medium.

(3) private cell networks (5G etc). Although maybe possible, somehow the government is allowed to police the airwaves and frequencies used, and it’s easy to pinpoint a transponder.

???

So I don’t really know of what physical tech could be the answer to centralized internet infra.

Any ideas?

TOR and VPNs are some ways we try to logically communicate freely in plain sight but they too are limited and ultimately subject to the infra in some way

nostr:npub199auzc6hkv2tu2gu3ym4tvjav6vec9f9h0e4xlauvdaqcanlzjas0975lv I heard you with nostr:npub1h8nk2346qezka5cpm8jjh3yl5j88pf4ly2ptu7s6uu55wcfqy0wq36rpev on AI Unchained. Specifically when you brought up briefly how Bitcoin/lightning/Nostr -related tech could transform the internet connectivity model, it related a lot to my questions in this post above and I wondered if you had any further thoughts on potential solutions?

In 2018 I had the most free time for myself in the past 10 years. It’s also just after I’d bought my first sats/Bitcoin without really understanding.

I wish so much that I’d spent that year learning about the Bitcoin space…

Later, in 2021, I started learning about trading and charts and started buying all sorts of shitty crypto just in time to lose a lot of my Bitcoin value when the momentum turned around .

Now I’m finally gaining the right knowledge and have the right passion, but I don’t have nearly as much free time AND so much dev is already underway in so many areas.

Would’ve loved to have been involved earlier.

But I’m earlier than many others, just need to keep learning and hopefully find places I can contribute

Hahaha. Sometimes I wonder if I can really get through life without losing my Bitcoin wallet keys one day

Lol. Just found mine. I’d saved it to iCloud Files so I wouldn’t lose it amongst my images… hahaha

Haha I did the other day but I’m guessing they’re busy so waiting before I ping again

Dammit… hope someone can help me (and your other ticket). Hahaha.

Okay I’ve started listening. Loving the energy but sad about the amount of auto-tuning. Loved the roughness of their early albums.

Nevertheless I am and will continue enjoying!
