A brief rant about people confusing an protocol with a corporate social media platform.

Blaming a protocol for a user’s speech is like blaming the dictionary for an article or book you don’t like. Nostr is a simple protocol. Developers and users may have a certain idealized purpose in mind, but it isn’t a magical solution for the bad behavior on other social media platforms in and of itself.

Developers and operators of clients/relays that make use the protocol will shape what is possible. User behavior sets the tone of the community and that has nothing to do with the protocol.

Free and open communication on public Nostr relays means that a person can expect just about anything. Just like a person can get on a soapbox in Central Park or Pier 39 and rant about whatever. That’s censorship-resistance.

It doesn’t mean everyone has to be forced to listen or engage with content they find objectionable. That’s where open write/open read, private write/open read, and private write / private read will come in. Along with private relays will come moderation. It is inevitable if people want to enjoy themselves without being subjected to trolls and spam.

The difference with Nostr is that you can, for the most part, keep your social graph and post your content on another relay. You can also setup your own relay if everyone is truly not allowing your speech. That’s it. That’s what censorship-resistant means (to me anyway). You can write a note, but you can’t force a relay operator to publish it, and you can’t force other users to read or engage with it.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

On point. It’s the protocol that is open in the sense that it allows for multiple relay and client implementations. And clients and relays of varying types will emerge, with differing levels of censorship.

But the power is to the user who gets to choose where to send and source their data. If a relay does something they don’t like, they don’t have to use it and can find another. That’s what’s awesome and special.

Haha. The reason to read would be to gain reasoning behind that conclusion so that you can help others come ti the same conclusion.

People need evidence and a story to help them understand. Some people can’t see it yet naturally, or some might thinks that’s just the way it has to be.

But the book gives a good history on how different types of moneys existed, where our current system fails, a clear definition of the type of sound money we want/ought to have and why Bitcoin is that money.

Not rare, but plenty don’t have cars. Public transport is insanely good here and if you live in the city you don’t need one really. When you do, you can rent or use a car sharing service.

I got one now because we had a baby recently and going with a stroller on the train every time is killer, and fitting/removing a car seat from a rental car gets tiring.

But for 9 years I was fine without owning a car. My wife doesn’t even have a license.

On my way out to ibaraki prefecture to pick up a car I just bought. Excited to own a car in Japan #pleblife

Are there #nostr #relays with regional replication/caching or are they mostly single location? Can imagine this is a contributor to slow experience for many using remote relays

How is it Friday already!? Happy, but I have so much work left to do in the rest of the sprint.

Made a broccoli soup and baked some salt butter rye bread rolls. Was delicious

Sorry I didn’t mention that those are self hosted on your own machine. So you’d need a decent spec computer, ideally with a good GPU

For image generation? I use stable diffusion based models. The XL models are pretty good quality.

Usually generate via ComfyUI or Automatic1111.

Oh my gosh. I actually made a joke with a friend using it the other day and they didn’t get it.. he’s only like 3-4 years younger than me..

Good old days on IRC Java applets over dial up..

I’m pretty sure I was getting catfished when I thought I was chatting with friendly girls on the other side.

I was only like 12 or something. 😂

Actually, a trashcan map would be awesome. Though I assume that was inside the train gates, right?

Maybe we can add all the trashcans we know to #yondar (go.yondar.me) haha

I'm not sure why, but when I've tried to post on #primal it always hangs without creating the note. The modal note dialog stays open with the post button disabled and there is no feedback.

I have a bunch of errors in the console, so not sure what's related.

I haven't used Primal much before but tried posting on it the other day and now again on a different computer both with the same outcome.

I see some relays are not connecting, but any attempts to remove those relays are not persisted.
