Every npub can be a payment endpoint by default.
So true. This is the biggest legal grift out there. Especially annual subscriptions where they renew (charge your card) in advance of the renewal date. A certain domain name registrar I use does this and it’s annoying as hell, because they don’t notify you in advance, claiming that you agreed to it at the initial signup. nostr:note1kcc7hq5e8s35u36pnp5pk696x7am3a8wrwanl3ax7uu7gu32uems5m6llv
We need to flip the 'Zero Trust Model' to the 'Full Authority Model'.
Indeed that's what Bitcoin and Nostr are - full authority models because you along have control over your private key.
Testing zaps, please stand by
The most powerful entity on the internet will be any self-generated npub that can publish its own notes across multiple relays and receive payments on its own terms.
A great four-minute video by Brett Scott in defence of physical cash.
His book ‘Cloud Money’ was a big surprise for me - he advocated for the defence of cash and made me realize that ‘cashless’ payment systems are a societal capture play.
His book also made me aware of the tension between central banks and private banks. Central banks by their very nature are placed in a conflict of interest. Savvy private banks know this, they know their position of privilege in the system; they can run rampant on moral hazard, knowing full well that the central bank has to pick up the pieces to maintain the trust of the overall system.
Eventually every handle from every ecosystem/platform will resolve to a sovereign npub that can send and receive zaps for universal payment.
Below, is an example of zapping a domain name address using the system I built that supports NIP-05. But it could easily be Twitter, BlueSky, etc.
The biggest advantage that #nostr has right now is its deeply integrated unstoppable payment capability in the form of zaps.
One day, I hope everyone in accepting payments can just say:
‘No apps, just zaps!’ nostr:note1nckf6krp5z20fw2qynkhew23cpg6tx545j59wwudnz9mm7eajaaqqhq4q0

Don't let anyone tell you that anything less than end-to-end encryption is desirable.

This is a #nostr #safebox zap to a nip05 address. Doesn't look like much but there is a lot going behind the scenes. The npub is resolved using nip05, the kind 0 event is looked up and the lud16 is taken from the profile. A lightning invoice is requested for the zap amount, the #safebox wallet gets the right proofs to melt from the mint and provides the invoice to pay.

On the receiving end, the zap and comment comes through!

Local money will become like a local area network address - works ok in your little context, but completely useless for everyone else.
Other social media networks are slick and cool, but I am also doubling down on #nostr because of its deep integration of payments and unstoppable protocol.
#Nostr will become the open socioeconomic layer of the internet

I just set up my own custom handle on BlueSky - @trbouma.supername.app (I own this domain name)
I gotta say, a custom handle instills ownership. A similar thing can be done with nip05, I've done it and my handle here is trbouma@openbalance.app which is the same as my lightning address (I built the system to be this way)
Anyway, I think it'll be a tough go to beat BlueSky as a better, censorship resistant system - I have a feeling that most people won't care.
But when you deeply integrate payments, so your handle can send and receive funds, now you're talking. BlueSky has yet to contemplate payments and this is where #nostr is a better socioeconomic network - not just a better social media network.
The use of the word “handle” to mean a nickname or pseudonym originates from CB (citizens band) radio culture in the United States during the mid-20th century. CB radio users needed a way to identify themselves while maintaining some anonymity, so they adopted unique names or pseudonyms, which became known as “handles.”
The term likely derives from the general sense of the word “handle” as something you use to grasp or manipulate an object. In this context, a “handle” serves as a figurative way to “grasp” someone’s identity in a communication setting. Over time, the use of “handle” expanded into other areas, such as online communities, gaming, and social media, where it retains the same meaning as a username or alias.
