> I’ve been addicted to cigarettes. The addiction is no joke, I can smoke cigars when I like with no craving or addiction

I find a similar thing with caffeine. I find coffee addictive in a way tea and other forms of caffeine are not. But then, I have ADHD, and stimulants don't affect my neurochemistry the same way they do most people.

Perhaps you're also an outlier for some reason? Could even be the same reason...

In Modern Monetary Theory, state-backed money ("fiat currency") loses value with every taxable transactions it's used for. The missing value is extinguished by tax.

So the more a dollar is used in a year, the faster it evaporates out of the money supply. If we can, we'll want to save state-backed money, ie prevent it from being used for transactions, to hold its value.

Demurrage is the opposite of taxing transactions. It taxes money while at rest, so we want to spend it.

Question for people who like to geek out about Merkle trees. Anti-crypto comments will be ignored.

If a P2P network is storing genealogical records, it does need universal consensus, right? Alice can't be the daughter of Bob in one part of the network, and daughter of Johan in another part.

Does that mean this is legitimate use case for a BlockChain? Or could you use something like HoloChain?

>1% transaction tax would make that in a month

Any decent suite of taxes on excessive wealth (eg CGT, profiteering tax, land tax, inheritance tax etc) would allow governments to settle more Waitangi claims, and increase spending on public services, and abolish GST, *and* run a deficit to help bring inflation down, until the real economy catches up with the money supply.

It seems like a no-brainer.

"AI art generators are trained on enormous datasets, containing millions upon millions of copyrighted images, harvested without their creator’s knowledge, let alone compensation or consent. This is effectively the greatest art heist in history. Perpetrated by respectable-seeming corporate entities backed by Silicon Valley venture capital. It’s daylight robbery."

The one thing I disagree with in this quote is "respectable-seeming".

Haere mai! You're in good company. nostr:npub16uk4yyw47haxwl0klhh7lcx3qatkyqmpc6gc4hwru3qedaeuueeqqkpv7k did that a couple of decades ago and never looked back?

Do you have a matrix account? There's a few rooms in the matrix of interest to local techies. Particularly the NZ Open Source Society room..

> You're bearing the burden of putting up with heretics and apostates whom you tolerate. Also "shut up and follow the law" for those being tolerated. Nobody had to like it. So there's that negativity

If we posit that politics is the new religion, for a significant number of people, I guess tolerance is probably a necessary minimum condition for avoiding both Inquisitions (by whoever holds power) and civil war.

It's not ideal. But changing either at this point would require not only protocol change, but some major retraining of everyone using them.

This kind of makes sense on centralised services where you're directing a message (at) someone. The current fediverse and matrix address formats take that, and mash it together with the...

This is kind of intriguing, if a bit rambly. Published in late 2020, it's one average dude's reflections on YouTube, after 5 years of daily vlogging, and a one month break from having anything anything to do with it:

I enjoyed the bits where he takes the piss out of the "smash that like button" shtick of professional YouTubers.

Pundits seriously describing Tuesday night's televised debate been the Labour and National leaders as...

"a wonderful debate between two centre-left politicians"

... have to be looking at political reality through a pretty distorted ideological lens. It would be stretching the truth to call them "centre-right".

This academic assessment positions both National *and* Labour policy in 2023 in the economic hard right:

It also increase self-esteem, empathy, kindness, compassion and appreciation for the world and ecosystems mastered by plants, fungi, and insects.
