The US Federal Reserve creating their own "digital currency" is absolutely an attempt at competing against Bitcoin.
However, they overlook one of the main incentives to Bitcoin, which is transaction anonymity in the absence of a centralized 3rd party. Bitcoin will remain to be the obvious choice.
These big drops are the easiest way to make profit if you can time it right. Sell before it bottoms out, then buy back a little at a time when it stabilizes.
