Instead of 50 separate state databases, and some states do not share their databases across state lines without your consent, there is one central federal database. They've wanted this for years.
To see where this is headed, look at what they're doing in the UK. π
They claim it's to enhance security but it has more to do with surveillance.
Most states made it mandatory and depending on where you live if you've renewed your driver's license recently you may already be enrolled.
Only about a dozen states or so give you the option to opt out.
