When you #homestead, you start taking resources very seriously.

This morning I cleaned all the gutters because rain was forecast.

So far today, 4mm has dropped which is the most we've had in nearly 6 months.

500m² of roof area means we capture 500L for every 1mm of rain.

The dam will recover significantly and be a large store of water for our gardens and animals.

The vast majority of grass roots are still in tact, so much of our pasture should green up again with some consistent rain, which will keep our animals fed.

When you're underprepared, you can spend huge amounts on water.

When you're prepared, it's free.

Mallacoota!!

Just over the NSW/VIC border, this was our first stop in VIC.

Awesome little seaside town. Huge tidal lake system packed full of bream and flathead.

VIC had a long weekend we weren’t aware of so ended up staying here longer than we’d liked but it was actually a nice forced holiday from our holiday.

A few nice relaxing days of long walks and bike rides and a bit of swimming.

There were plenty of kids about so the boys had an absolute ball making new friends. We barely saw them as they were off adventuring, playing in the playground, riding bikes and playing soccer…. Barely a device turned on for 5days….magic

A few wild koalas in the trees throughout the park too. Spectacular to see them in the wild which is pretty rare for us Nth Qld’ers.

Few big grey kangaroos come down to watch the boys playing soccer. One big boy looked pretty buff.

Making some Wagyu beef stock.

These are bones from 1/8 of a locally raised Wagyu cow I bought yesterday using Bitcoin. The fat layer is thick, I'm guessing from all the marrow.

It's been simmering 20hrs on the stove in water, salt and a cup of vinegar.

I'll remove the bones, strain and start evaporating most of the water out in a few hours.

Beef stock is the secret ingredient in almost every saucy dish I make. I store the concentrated stock in cubes in the freezer.

Day 12

Another big long walk

Some laundry - we don’t have a washing machine fitted to the van. Slight regrets. We use a lot of cupboard space and you would have to sacrifice some to fit a washing machine. You have to get them fitted at construction as the plumbing needs to be run prior to fit out. Alas, we did not and have been spending about $20 a load and have done 3 loads so far. Also a big variation in prices. We have seen anywhere from $4-$7 per load. The other thing we considered was a portable machine. Decided against as it yet another thing to lug around.

Used Australia Post parcel collect service to get a few things we bought online delivered. Such as around 1.8kg of my favourite dried meats….

This is a good service for Aussies without a fixed address. Get things sent to the post office where you will be. I would definitely recommend planning ahead here and give yourself a couple of days for the item to sit there before you arrive. You don’t want to be stuck in a town waiting for your delivery.

Also trigger warning: digital ID needed (Aust post variety). Choose the person in the family most likely to do hard time in the future and compromise their security instead. :)

More swimming and slides and a nice drink at the swim up bar.

Took doggo for a bath and then a run at the doggy park. He is slimming out nicely with all this walking and exercise.

Currently back into doing 100 push ups a day. I’m on day 7. Keen to stick this out until the end. Will post before and after pics if I get buff. I won’t promise anything.

Used ChatGPT to draw up an email I’ll use to email parks around Oz for gigs. Stay and play…

Kids homeschool going great. Found out some holes in their math game we didn’t realise existed. Can plug them easily over coming days. Math is foundational. People of struggle often missed some of these foundational steps along the way. Set up for failure by the system. Grateful I have the opportunity to intervene.

I didn’t get far with this as I couldn’t get the StartOS installer to work on the new NUC. I’m not too concerned about having the nice interface or app marketplace so instead I’m installing the new node manually on Linux. So far Bitcoin Core is installed and has finished syncing.
