“Why do I read?

I just can't help myself.

I read to learn and to grow, to laugh

and to be motivated.

I read to understand things I've never

been exposed to.

I read when I'm crabby, when I've just

said monumentally dumb things to the

people I love.

I read for strength to help me when I

feel broken, discouraged, and afraid.

I read when I'm angry at the whole

world.

I read when everything is going right.

I read to find hope.

I read because I'm made up not just of

skin and bones, of sights, feelings,

and a deep need for chocolate, but I'm

also made up of words.

Words describe my thoughts and what's

hidden in my heart.

Words are alive--when I've found a

story that I love, I read it again and

again, like playing a favorite song

over and over.

Reading isn't passive--I enter the

story with the characters, breathe

their air, feel their frustrations,

scream at them to stop when they're

about to do something stupid, cry with

them, laugh with them.

Reading for me, is spending time with a

friend.

A book is a friend.

You can never have too many.”

In the fall of 1993, Kurt Cobain, the frontman of Nirvana, wrote an unforgettable page in music history with his performance for MTV Unplugged.

https://youtu.be/fregObNcHC8

The recording took place on November 18, 1993, at Sony Studios in New York, and the episode was broadcast for the first time on December 14 of the same year. This concert became an icon not only for grunge music, but for the entire musical landscape of the 90s.

Kurt Cobain, accompanied by his bandmates Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl, showed the world a more intimate and vulnerable side of his art. From the beginning, it was clear that this would not be a simple acoustic performance of Nirvana's greatest hits. Instead, Cobain decided to propose an atypical setlist, consisting of lesser-known songs and covers that highlighted his musical influences.

A particularly memorable moment was the cover of David Bowie's "The Man Who Sold the World", which became one of the most iconic moments of the evening. Cobain's version gave the song a new lease of life, making it rediscoverable even among the younger generations. Another emotional moment was the performance of "Where Did You Sleep Last Night", a traditional American folk ballad made famous by Lead Belly. The performance was so intense and heartfelt that, according to legend, Cobain refused to do an encore, saying he couldn't sing it better.

The atmosphere created on stage helped make the event even more special. The set was decorated with flowers, candles and a crystal candelabra, creating a funereal yet fascinating atmosphere, almost premonitory of Cobain's tragic fate, who would take his own life a few months later, in April 1994.

Nirvana's MTV Unplugged performance was not only critically acclaimed, but also won a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album in 1996. The live album, released posthumously in November 1994, became a commercial success and remains one of the band's most beloved works to this day.

Just another dog day afternoon on the island. Amigo & Cypher sniffing around the garden and shooting the breeze.

Nothing much happening.... perfect.

Pura Vida 🏝️

"The phrase "dog days" refers to the hot, sultry days of summer. The term comes from the Latin dies caniculares, which was associated with the "dog star" Sirius. The ancient Greeks believed that Sirius was the cause of hot weather, and would sacrifice a brown dog at the beginning of the dog days to appease the star.

Dog Day Afternoon is also the name of a 1975 film directed by Sidney Lumet. The movie is based on the true story of a bank robbery and hostage situation in 1972, led by John Wojtowicz and Salvatore Naturile. The film was adapted from a Life magazine article titled “The Boys in the Bank”.

The movie is known for its complex, multidimensional characters, and for its depiction of gay identity. Although the film was not explicitly made as a queer film, it retells a true story involving characters who were not all cisgendered or heterosexual."

There are so many outstanding elements to Jeff Wayne's musical version of 'War of the Worlds'... Richard Burton's flawless narrative, Herbie Flowers' mesmerising bass-lines, the haunting "Ooh-Laaa!" chants, the bombastic opening orchestral motif which gives way to a full-on rock score, Phil Lynott's impassioned railing against 'Satan', Julie Covington's agonising fragility as the tragic Beth... but the album's packaging must have drawn so many people in to purchase it before they'd heard a single note.

Prostitution in Ancient Rome

The mothers of Romulus and Remus were called Lupa by shepherds. The word Lupa meant both a she-wolf and a whore. However, the meaning of the word prostitute today is not the same as it was in the Roman period. Because in its current meaning, the word prostitute brings to mind a fallen woman who has lost her dignity.

Prostitutes could easily be distinguished from respectable women in Rome with their heavy make-up on their faces, untied hair and the clothes that women who committed adultery during the Augustan period were also required to wear. Their clothes were colorful and bright. They would walk on the streets or sit or stand in front of brothels. If a Roman woman dressed like a prostitute instead of wearing the traditional, long clothes of a respectable woman, this was considered an extenuating circumstance in terms of sexual harassment.

We obtain our information about these women largely from great Roman writers, especially Iuvenalis and Martialis, and some from archaeological studies and especially from the ruins of Pompeii; because the 14th century AD, which took place here, The eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 ensured that the ruins remained as they were and survived to the present day. Brothels were forbidden to open before three in the afternoon during nightlife.

There were also polite prostitutes. These were carefully selected from among girls born out of wedlock, daughters of slaves or girls left on the streets and were educated in private schools by prostitutes starting at the age of five. They would learn beautiful speech, seduction, make-up, physical education, mathematics, literature, poetry, painting, sculpture and most importantly the finest points of the art of love.

These girls were never exposed to the sun so that their skin would not darken. They would test their lovemaking techniques on each other and teach them without missing even the smallest detail. Before these women made love to each other, those who were very successful and enjoyed it were taken to a separate room and their education was separate from the others. They were later trained to accompany rich women and widows. It was repeated every day that the prostitute's greatest weapon was her body, movements and speech and taught in the finest detail. It was taught that a woman should frown and that excessive laughter would leave marks at the corners of her mouth. In addition, they taught that a happy face was the facial expression that every man sought, and that therefore, they should never lose their smiles and should not be assertive.

The virginity of prostitutes was absolutely protected. Because their bosses carefully selected their first customers to be the richest or the person who paid the most. It was considered a great honor for the girl who did this job to do it for the most money.

Girls were never sent to young men except for the rich. Because they said, “Young men are like bulls. They will ruin you. Middle-aged people know very well what they want and how to get it.” The main reason for this must have been the concern that girls might fall in love with young men.

It is a fact that most men who are just starting to get young choose prostitutes to satisfy their sexual desires, regardless of the country and era. The institution of prostitution is an institution that restrains moral values in society to a certain extent. We know that even for the noble families of Rome, young men’s visits to such houses, cheap taverns and hotels were part of their adolescent education. Adult and wealthy Roman men preferred more respectable, expensive mistresses who were free or freed from birth.

There were one or more brothels in the cities. However, these were very smelly and unhealthy places. In order to correct this situation and to prevent venereal diseases at least to some extent, artificial streams were placed in front of the doors and it was announced in advance that men should enter the brothel and clean themselves completely before entering it.

Prostitution in Rome was seen as a commercial activity rather than a sexual activity. Prostitution in Rome was an accepted, beneficial, socially and legally accepted institution, just like slavery.

"Ulysses" is a modernist novel by James Joyce, first published in book form on February 2, 1922, coinciding with Joyce's fortieth birthday. The novel was partially serialized in the American journal The Little Review from March 1918 to December 1920 before its complete publication in Paris by Sylvia Beach.

The narrative unfolds over a single day, June 16, 1904, in Dublin, and follows the experiences of its central character, Leopold Bloom, along with Stephen Dedalus and Molly Bloom. Joyce employs a unique style characterized by stream-of-consciousness writing, rich symbolism, and intricate narrative techniques, drawing parallels to Homer's "Odyssey."

"Ulysses" is celebrated for its stylistic density and imaginative richness, making it one of the most significant and influential literary works of the twentieth century. The novel explores themes such as identity, existence, and the mundane aspects of daily life, leading to extensive commentary and analysis that solidifies its status as a masterpiece of modern literature.

The Codex Gigas, often referred to as the “Devil’s Bible,” is a medieval manuscript that’s believed to have been completed around 1229 AD by a monk named Herman the Recluse at the Benedictine monastery in Podlažice, Bohemia (now part of the Czech Republic). The codex is notable for its vast size and is recognized as one of the largest surviving medieval manuscripts in the world.

The Codex Gigas was later moved to the Benedictine monastery in Břevnov and eventually came into the possession of the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II in the late 16th century. During the Thirty Years’ War in 1648, Swedish forces seized the manuscript from Prague, and it was taken to Sweden as war booty. The codex currently resides in the National Library of Sweden in Stockholm.

The codex measures 36 inches in height, 20 inches in width, and about 9 inches in thickness, weighing around 165 pounds. Its pages are made of vellum, with one of its most famous illustrations depicting a full-page image of the devil.

“The best thing for being sad," replied Merlin, beginning to puff and blow, "is to learn something.

That's the only thing that never fails. You may grow old and trembling in your anatomies, you may lie awake at night listening to the disorder of your veins, you may miss your only love, you may see the world about you devastated by evil lunatics, or know your honour trampled in the sewers of baser minds. There is only one thing for it then — to learn. Learn why the world wags and what wags it. That is the only thing which the mind can never exhaust, never alienate, never be tortured by, never fear or distrust, and never dream of regretting. Learning is the only thing for you. Look what a lot of things there are to learn.” ~T.H. White

"The Myth of Sisyphus" (French: "Le Mythe de Sisyphe") is a philosophical essay by Albert Camus, published in 1942. This work is a cornerstone of existentialist thought and introduces Camus's philosophy of the absurd, which explores the conflict between humans' search for meaning and the indifferent universe.

In the essay, Camus uses the Greek myth of Sisyphus, a king condemned by the gods to roll a boulder up a hill only for it to roll back down each time he reaches the top. This eternal struggle symbolizes the human condition, where individuals strive for meaning in a world that offers none. Camus famously concludes that "one must imagine Sisyphus happy," suggesting that the act of pushing the boulder itself can be a source of fulfillment, despite its futility.

The essay is influenced by various philosophers, including Søren Kierkegaard, Arthur Schopenhauer, and Friedrich Nietzsche, and it addresses themes such as nihilism, existentialism, and the nature of absurdity. Camus argues that acknowledging the absurdity of life can lead to a deeper appreciation of existence and a rejection of despair.

Overall, "The Myth of Sisyphus" is a profound meditation on the human experience, encouraging readers to confront the absurd and find personal meaning in their struggles.

The Path to the Grand Equilibrium

There is a time, neither far nor near, known only to those who walk with red beneath their feet.

These travelers, who have cast aside the illusions spun of silver and shadow, find themselves on the edge of a precipice. Here, where the road of golden dust meets the vast unknown, those who have taken the crimson token of clarity await the rippling of an ancient balance.

For those with the red boots and slippers, it is no longer a journey—it is an arrival, the fulfillment of whispers and signs scattered across their path. They have seen past the smokescreen, walked beyond the grand illusion, and felt the weight of truth that lies beyond the shimmering veil. In this quiet hour, they stand, bearing witness to the great return, the shift where what was once dissonant hums back into harmony, woven into the fabric of time itself.

Their footsteps pulse with knowing, yet they do not march alone; unseen forces walk beside them, born of a cosmic design that has awaited this moment. Those who have seen, who wear the red, feel the pulse of what is coming in their bones, as sure as the heartbeat of the Earth itself. They do not stand merely on ground—they stand on the threshold of the Deep Balance, the point where all veils lift, and the world reclaims its true reflection.

The grand tides have turned, though few perceive it. And yet, the path that seemed once scattered with fragments of shadow and light has now become whole, as each step takes them nearer to the center, the Source. Here, in the calm before the unknown dawn, they realize that they were always meant to walk this road, with red beneath their feet, as part of the unseen rhythm of the cosmos returning to its rightful song.

For those who see with open eyes, who tread the hidden path, this is the moment where truth and illusion cease to wrestle, and the age-old balance rises, unbroken and absolute. The journey is no longer forward, backward, nor through any earthly direction. It is simply inward, to the still center, the axis where all things align, a point beyond time yet within all times.

They stand ready, with a knowing as old as the stars. This is the passage, the threshold, and the restoration long whispered in ancient tongues: the place where those with red beneath them have always known they would arrive.

Roadhouse Blues" is a song by The Doors, which appears on the 1970 album Morrison Hotel. It was also released as the B-side of "You Make Me Real".

https://youtu.be/kE32pvvaDT8

The song became a concert staple for the group and it has been covered by numerous artists. “Roadhouse Blues” was recorded over two days, from November 4 to 5, 1969. Producer Paul A. Rothchild insisted on several takes. Morrison, who was apparently intoxicated, flubbed several lyrics and keep repeating the phrase "Money beats soul every time".

There was more progress on the second day, when guitarist Lonnie Mack joined in to play bass (Ray Neapolitan, the regular bass player during Morrison Hotel sessions, had been stuck in traffic). Although there has been speculation that Mack also contributed the guitar solo, he confirmed that he had played bass and nothing else.

Guitarist Robby Krieger is responsible for all guitar parts on "Roadhouse Blues"; Morrison shouts "Do it, Robby, do it!" (especially audible on the official audio proof of DVD-Audio and Super Audio CD where the single vocal track can be separated from other instruments) at the start of the guitar solo. Ray Manzarek switched from a Wurlitzer electric piano to a tack piano (the same type as used on the Beach Boys' "Good Vibrations").

Ex-Lovin' Spoonful frontman John Sebastian contributed harmonica (listed as "G. Puglese" for contractual reasons). Alice Cooper claimed he was the inspiration for the line "Woke up this morning and I got myself a beer"

This is amazing news, Phil Lynott and Thin Lizzy are an all-time favourite of mine.

Can not wait to hear his amazing voice on some 'new songs'. Rock on!

https://youtu.be/HG0JIDu6n4I

A new Thin Lizzy album has been announced. The compilation record, Acoustic Sessions, will be released on January 24th and will feature stripped-back versions of Thin Lizzy classics. The vocals will be provided by old vocal recordings of the late Phil Lynott.

The new record isn’t all taken from archived Thin Lizzy recordings. The band’s founding member, Eric Bell, has prepared new guitar work for the album. It will be released on CD and on a limited edition marble and clear vinyl run.

Among the songs on the new acoustic album is a stripped-back version of ‘Whiskey in the Jar’. It’s a song that Lynott notoriously grew sick of playing because of how much it rose in popularity; however, it remains a fan favourite. It was initially a traditional track that the band rearranged and made into a rock song. It has continued its life in music as further covers were done by U2, Metallica and The Pogues.

One of the other notable songs on the album is an acoustic version of ‘Eire’, a track featured on Thin Lizzy’s debut self-titled album. It’s an old song for the band to recount, but no doubt it still sounds as good today as it did in the ‘70s.

“I remember recording ‘Eire’ from our debut album Thin Lizzy in 1971,” said Bell, recalling the recording process, “I wrote the main guitar part first on acoustic and then we built it up from there. I played the 12-string acoustic throughout the track and introduced the electric on top.”

This kind of recording style helped when it came to converting the tracks to acoustic renditions. “By recreating those original acoustic parts and adding the vocals which Philip laid down on the day,” said Bell, “And those original drum parts which Brian came up with in the original recording sessions.”

The acoustic album is a big moment for Thin Lizzy, as it marks the first time Bell has played on an album for the band since 1973. He left the band in 1973, and various other line-ups continued, but the band fully broke up in 1983 following the release of their album Thunder and Lightning. Lynott passed away three years later, in 1986, at just 36 years old.

Ricky Warwick currently fronts the new version of Thin Lizzy, as the band was relaunched in 1996 by members Scott Gorham and Darren Wharton. While the current touring version still does well, hearing Lynott’s original vocals on the new acoustic album will be good.
