The custom of "telling the bees" is a charming and ancient tradition where beekeepers inform their bees about significant events in their lives, such as deaths, births, marriages, and other major occurrences.

This practice is believed to have its roots in Celtic mythology, where bees were seen as messengers between the human world and the spirit world. The presence of a bee after a death was thought to signify the soul leaving the body. The tradition became particularly prominent in the 18th and 19th centuries in Western Europe and the United States.

To tell the bees, the head of the household or the "goodwife" would approach the hives, gently knock to get the bees' attention, and then softly murmur the news in a solemn tone. This ritual was believed to keep the bees informed and prevent them from leaving the hive or dying. The custom underscores the deep connection and respect that people historically had for bees, viewing them as integral members of the household and community.

It’s easy to be swept away by the turbulence of life, but true strength is about standing steady when everything else is shaking. Embrace the challenges, breathe deeply, and face each moment with clarity.

The world needs more people who can bring light to darkness, calm to the storm, and courage to uncertainty. Strength comes from knowing that even in the storm, you have the power to create your own peace.

🎬 Pan's Labyrinth (2006)

🎬 *Pan's Labyrinth* (2006), directed by Guillermo del Toro, is a dark fantasy masterpiece that intertwines a haunting fairy tale with the brutal realities of post-Civil War Spain. Set in 1944, the film follows young Ofelia (Ivana Baquero), a girl who moves with her pregnant mother to live with her new stepfather, the ruthless Captain Vidal (Sergi López). To escape the horrors of her life, Ofelia discovers a hidden, magical labyrinth and meets a mysterious faun who tasks her with completing a series of dangerous quests to prove she’s the reincarnation of a lost princess.

Del Toro masterfully contrasts the real and fantasy worlds, crafting a story that explores innocence, resistance, and the power of imagination. The magical elements are stunningly surreal yet dark, featuring creatures that are as mesmerizing as they are terrifying, like the Pale Man and the Faun. Del Toro’s visionary storytelling and dedication to practical effects bring this world to life in rich, unsettling detail, making each scene feel both enchanting and foreboding.

While *Pan's Labyrinth* delves into whimsical fantasy, it’s grounded in themes of resilience and sacrifice, as Ofelia navigates the brutality around her. The movie’s visuals are arresting, and its cinematography, paired with a haunting score by Javier Navarrete, amplifies the film’s dreamlike yet oppressive atmosphere. Both heartbreaking and beautiful, *Pan's Labyrinth* resonates as a powerful allegory on innocence lost and the resilience of hope amid darkness, solidifying its place as a modern classic in fantasy cinema.

THE WORLD BEFORE DEGLACIATION

...

What you see in the photo is an alignment of stones found beneath Kootenay Lake in British Columbia, Canada. Scholars disagree on the origin of this alignment of stones. Some say it is a natural phenomenon, while others think it is a true petroglyph. Researchers also disagree on when it would have been created. At present, however, no research expedition has been made to study the phenomenon. One fact is certain: those aligned stones lie under the waters of the lake.

...

This event reminds us that long ago, the world was very different from how we know it today. We refer to about 14,000, before the deglaciation. At that time, the sea level was much lower, and there were more landmasses than there are today. To give a few examples, we can say that in place of present-day Indonesia was a small continent that is lost today. Or, we can say that England was attached to the rest of Europe by a large plain.

...

And then what? And then the glaciers of Northern Europe and North America melted in a very short time, and the whole world experienced a real “apocalypse,” a rise in the waters of about 120 meters. All the coasts of planet Earth were submerged, and much of the adjacent plains as well.

...

A very serious mistake that is continually made by many (not all, fortunately) historians, archaeologists and anthropologists is to think that the world has always been as we know it. Nothing could be more wrong. The thaw that occurred about 14,000 years ago, the comet bombardment that occurred about 12,800 years ago (now accepted and proven by the scientific community in its entirety), the Younger Dryas (a mini ice age) that occurred about 11,800 years ago, and the Desertification of the Sahara that began 9,000 years ago, have completely redesigned the environment in which human beings have lived for the past 15,000 years. We are the “survivors” of those events. Others, unfortunately, did not make it.

...

It doesn't take a degree in archaeology to understand that whatever settlements/cities/villages were found along the coast, and in many cases even inland, are now under the sea, with about 20 meters of mud covering them. So it is not correct to say that we know all the civilizations that have followed one another in our past. To be precise, we only know the civilizations that were NOT submerged by rising waters, that were NOT affected by the bombardment of comets, and that were NOT in the Sahara before it became a desert. Of course, there are many of them. But, of course, they are not all of them.

...

Soul, Mind, Body Medicine: A Complete Soul Healing System for Optimum Health and Vitality by Dr. Zhi Gang Sha presents a holistic approach to healing by integrating concepts of the soul, mind, and body. Dr. Sha, who is trained in both Western medicine and traditional Chinese medicine, proposes a philosophy that sees the soul as the key element in achieving health and balance.

His teachings combine spiritual wisdom, energy healing, and practical techniques that aim to activate self-healing on a deep, multidimensional level.

Here are 10 lessons from the book:

1. The Power of the Soul: Dr. Sha emphasizes that the soul is the most important aspect of healing, even more so than the mind and body. According to him, the soul has the power to heal, bless, and transform every aspect of life, including health, relationships, and finances. By communicating with and empowering the soul, individuals can unlock healing energy and guidance.

2. Soul Healing Mantras and Affirmations: The book introduces specific mantras, or "soul orders," that are believed to activate the healing power of the soul. These mantras help individuals focus their intentions and channel energy toward healing specific areas, whether physical, emotional, or spiritual.

3. Body, Mind, and Soul Integration: Dr. Sha’s philosophy posits that the body, mind, and soul are interconnected and should work in harmony to achieve true healing. By aligning all three, individuals can achieve balance and experience deeper levels of vitality and peace.

4. Soul Language and Communication: Dr. Sha introduces the concept of "soul language," a way of connecting with the inner self and the divine. Practicing soul language involves tapping into one's innate wisdom and using it as a tool for guidance and healing.

5. Healing the Soul First: Dr. Sha believes that healing should begin with the soul, as it is the source of life and the body’s guide. He advocates for a "soul-over-mind-over-matter" approach, which posits that when the soul is healed, the mind and body can follow.

6. Soul Self-Healing Techniques: The book provides a variety of practical exercises and techniques for self-healing, such as visualizations, breathing exercises, and movements that are designed to harmonize the body’s energy flow. These techniques are intended to remove energy blockages and restore balance.

7. Sound and Frequency Healing: Dr. Sha discusses the power of sound as a healing tool. Certain sounds and frequencies can harmonize the body’s energy fields, promoting physical and emotional health. He includes chanting and specific sounds associated with healing particular organs and systems.

8. The Concept of Karma and Forgiveness: Dr. Sha incorporates the idea of karma in his healing philosophy, suggesting that unresolved issues from the past can manifest as physical or emotional ailments. Practicing forgiveness, both for oneself and others, is a key step toward healing and releasing negative energy.

9. Meditation for Healing: Meditation is presented as an essential practice for connecting with the soul and accessing higher levels of consciousness. Dr. Sha provides guided meditation techniques that aim to activate healing energy within the body and mind.

10. Faith and Intent in Healing: Dr. Sha stresses the importance of having faith and a strong intention in the healing process. He believes that by focusing one's intention on healing and remaining open to transformation, individuals can access deeper sources of power and potential for change.

Soul, Mind, Body Medicine offers a unique fusion of spiritual and physical healing principles that challenge conventional medical approaches. Dr. Zhi Gang Sha's methods encourage a holistic approach to health, promoting a balance of soul, mind, and body to create profound healing and transformation. The book serves as a guide for individuals seeking an alternative approach to wellness through the integration of spiritual practices, energy healing, and personal empowerment.

Brother on the Cover: 50+ Covers for George Orwell’s 1984

by Daniel J. Solove

One of the most well-known classic privacy books is George Orwell’s 1984, and it has been published in countless editions around the world. I enjoy collecting things, and I’ve gathered up more than 50 book covers of various editions of the novel. I find it interesting how various artists and designers try to capture the novel’s themes. I thought I’d share the covers with you.

Orwell’s 1984 chronicles a harrowing totalitarian society, one that engages in massive surveillance of its citizenry. Everywhere are posters that say “NSA Big Brother Is Watching You.” From the novel:

Outside, even through the shut window-pane, the world looked cold. Down in the street little eddies of wind were whirling dust and torn paper into spirals, and though the sun was shining and the sky a harsh blue, there seemed to be no colour in anything, except the posters that were plastered everywhere. The black moustachio’d face gazed down from every commanding corner. There was one on the house-front immediately opposite. BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU, the caption said, while the dark eyes looked deep into Winston’s own. Down at streetlevel another poster, torn at one corner, flapped fitfully in the wind, alternately covering and uncovering the single word INGSOC. In the far distance a helicopter skimmed down between the roofs, hovered for an instant like a bluebottle, and darted away again with a curving flight. It was the police patrol, snooping into people’s windows.

Another technique of surveillance is called the “telescreen,” which is a two-way TV set — as citizens watch television, someone from Big Brother could be watching them. Today, the “telescreen” is called “the Internet.”

Another short excerpt from the novel:

There was of course no way of knowing whether you were being watched at any given moment. How often, or on what system, the Thought Police plugged in on any individual wire was guesswork. It was even conceivable that they watched everybody all the time. But at any rate they could plug in your wire whenever they wanted to. You had to live — did live, from habit that became instinct — in the assumption that every sound you made was overheard, and, except in darkness, every movement scrutinized.

Now without further ado, here are the cover images. Enjoy!
