Roman buildings... It's Roman concrete!

Roman concrete, also known as opus caementicium, is a testament to the craftsmanship and technical prowess of the engineers of ancient Rome. This remarkable building material played a crucial role in some of the most durable structures of the Roman Empire, many of which still exist today. The secret to the longevity and strength of Roman concrete lies in its unique composition.

A key ingredient in Roman concrete is volcanic ash called pozzolana, found in abundance in the area around Mount Vesuvius in Naples. Pozzolana was mixed with lime and water, resulting in a chemical reaction that created a durable and weather-resistant binder. This bond, combined with aggregates such as rubble, stones, and bricks, formed a strong composite material that could stand the test of time.

The Romans also incorporated other additives into their concrete mixes to improve its properties. One of these additives was seawater, which reacted with lime to create additional minerals that strengthened the concrete and made it more resistant to corrosion. This innovation allowed the Romans to build structures such as harbors, bridges, and aqueducts that could withstand the corrosive effects of seawater.

The Father of Rock and Roll, Chuck Berry.

Born in 1926 in St. Louis, Chuck's love for music began young, with his first performance at Sumner High in 1941.

In 1955, he broke through with ‘Maybellene’, an R&B No. 1 hit, followed by classics like “Johnny B. Goode, “Roll Over Beethoven,” and “Rock and Roll Music.” His iconic “duck walk” and electrifying performances made him a rock legend, earning him a spot in the first Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986.

Chuck played over 200 shows at the Duck Room in Blueberry Hill, leaving an indelible mark on music.

"Pardon me, but we have a strict policy concerning the handling of the instruments.

An employee of Ray's Music Exchange must be present. Now, may I help you?"

At Dan Aykroyd's demand, soul and R&B stars James Brown, Cab Calloway, Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin were cast in speaking parts in "The Blues Brothers" (1980) to support musical numbers built around them.

This caused friction between director John Landis and Universal later in the production, as its costs far exceeded the original budget. Since none of them except Charles had had any hits in recent years, the studio wanted the director to replace them with – or add performances by – younger acts, such as Rose Royce, whose "Car Wash" had made them disco stars after its use in the 1976 film of that name.

"Shake A Tail Feather" was originally recorded in 1963 by the Chicago-based group The Five Du-Tones (yet appears in the original "Hairspray" (1988), which takes place in 1962).

It has been covered by many other artists over the years. Ray Charles covered and performed the song during his "The Blues Brothers" scenes in a version that included calls for various 1960s dances, such as the Twist, the Monkey, The Fly, The Swim, The Frug, the Mashed Potato and The Boogaloo to be performed by a crowd gathered outside Ray’s Music Exchange.

World's oldest aircraft carrier discovered rusting by the River Thames.

The worlds' oldest aircraft carrier which was a precursor to today's giant Navy vessels has been discovered - rusting by a river bank.

Looking like another just another rusting hull poking out of the water, for years the large dirt covered rusting wreck in the Thames was ignored.

But a maritime journalist spotted the vessel was a 1918 Thorneycroft Seaplane Lighter.

Although at just 58 feet long it looks nothing like the modern HMS Ark Royal - which is more than ten times as long - the damaged vessel was the first of the kind.

The tiny craft, discarded in the river like a shopping trolley or piece of litter, would have seen action during the First World War as aircraft carriers were introduced for the first time.

Now it is being restored by experts at the Fleet Air Arm Museum in Somerset after being recovered from the water.

Originally it would have carried one plane that was launched by being towed into the wind - and then recovered after it was ditched into the sea on landing.

Jon Jefferies, from the museum, said the small vessel was a significant find.

'It's only tiny but it's this ship that led to the development of the massive modern aircraft carriers,' he said.

It's a shame as they are two very talented actors. Some books do not adapt well to the cinema. I love to watch movies of books I have read and compare and contrast.

Often the books are much better.

"He felt that the darkness, if it ever came, would envelope everything, the real and the imaginary. It would envelop him, too, and everything he knew or had ever known, as if it had never been, and in its place there would be nothing but darkness, the smell of a dead sea, an empty horizon. It would be the end of everything. But the darkness never came."

-THE ISLAND LIFE-

Have you ever felt lost, overwhelmed, or just plain stuck? If so, then Gary John Bishop's "Wise as Fuk: Simple Truths to Guide You Through the Shtstorms of Life" might be the wake-up call you need.

This no-nonsense guide offers a refreshing perspective on life's challenges, delivered with a healthy dose of humor and blunt honesty.

Here are 7 powerful lessons I gleaned from this eye-opening book:

1. Your Reality is Self-Created

One of the most profound insights in "Wise as Fu*k" is the concept that your reality is largely a product of your own thoughts and beliefs. We often blame external circumstances for our unhappiness, but Bishop challenges us to take ownership of our experiences. By recognizing that our thoughts shape our reality, we can begin to consciously choose a more positive and empowering perspective.

2. The Power of Now

In a world that's constantly pulling us towards the past or the future, Bishop emphasizes the importance of living in the present moment. By focusing on the here and now, we can reduce stress, increase our enjoyment of life, and make more informed decisions. Instead of dwelling on past mistakes or worrying about future uncertainties, we can embrace the present moment and take action.

3. The Illusion of Control

We often strive to control every aspect of our lives, but Bishop reminds us that true control is an illusion. Life is full of uncertainties, and trying to micromanage every situation can lead to frustration and disappointment. By accepting that we can't control everything, we can free ourselves from unnecessary stress and focus on what truly matters.

4. The Importance of Self-Compassion

In our pursuit of self-improvement, it's easy to become overly critical of ourselves. Bishop encourages us to practice self-compassion, treating ourselves with the same kindness and understanding that we would offer to a friend. By embracing our imperfections and acknowledging our efforts, we can build greater self-esteem and resilience.

5. The Value of Solitude

In today's hyperconnected world, it's easy to feel overwhelmed by constant noise and stimulation. Bishop highlights the importance of solitude as a means of self-reflection and inner peace. By spending time alone, we can reconnect with ourselves, recharge our batteries, and gain clarity on our goals and values.

6. The Art of Letting Go

Holding onto grudges, regrets, and past hurts can weigh us down and prevent us from moving forward. Bishop encourages us to let go of the things that no longer serve us. By releasing the past, we can create space for new opportunities and experiences.

7. The Power of Action

Knowledge is power, but it's only through action that we can truly transform our lives. Bishop emphasizes the importance of taking consistent action towards our goals, no matter how small. By taking one step at a time, we can gradually build momentum and achieve our dreams.

"Wise as Fu*k" is a refreshing and thought-provoking read that challenges us to rethink our approach to life. By embracing the lessons outlined in this book, we can cultivate greater self-awareness, resilience, and fulfillment. Remember, the power to change your life lies within you.

The story behind Led Zeppelin IV’s stick man is so great. Robert Plant found the colored version in an antique store without context and used it in the album cover.

https://youtu.be/Ly6ZhQVnVow

More than 50 years later, the original black and white photograph was found in a Victorian photo album with the caption “A Wiltshire Thatcher”, which allowed for his identity to be assumed to be Lot Longyear, a widower who lived from 1823-1893

Led Zeppelin Vol IV. The thatcher is thought to be Lot Long – sometimes known as Longyear – who was born in the town of Mere, Wiltshire in 1823 and was a widower living in a small cottage when the photograph was taken. He died in 1893.
