Landlocked castaway priest in the Age of Disintegration

The Gospel today was on preferring darkness to light. I am pondering how the light often comes as self-awareness, mediated by honest insight about ourselves by others, whether positive or critical. It accompanies failure, too, after reaching out for a potential good and not realizing it, for lack of determination or foresight or teamwork. This is precious knowledge, indeed, hard won and to be treasured. Anyone who finds a friend capable of speaking to such knowledge with candor and grace has found a sturdy shelter, a treasure beyond reckoning.

Apropos of nothing, hear this outstanding presentation and analysis of the experience of anger:

https://share.snipd.com/post/087b3e51-318b-4a0e-b5a8-391e976305c8

I often find people simply lack any vocabulary whatsoever regarding anger, beyond "anger is bad and a failure".

But anger is not sinful in and of itself. Thomas helps name what is *good* about anger and how it commonly goes wrong.

Having some trouble with my relays and contacts. I appear to have lost a few follows and I'm having to re-follow many npubs.

I'm posting from an app that lists the ones that have followed me in the past... you might just check to make sure you're still following me if you see this.

Backing up my contacts list now. follows.nostr.com

Amazing.... That is a niche world I have been a part of ever since high school and college. I studied at one of the handful of Great Books colleges here in the US.

Our parish school has been moving to the classical liberal arts model but is closing this year for all sorts of reasons. The world of education is not an easy place to be a reformer.

I will keep an eye out for your entries. Illegitimi non carborundum

Anyone got any good Christian podcast recommendations?

Trying Lord of Spirits atm, it's often recommended. https://www.ancientfaith.com/podcasts/lordofspirits

I know it's not a podcast but also into Father Spyridon's YouTube

These might be obvious choices.

What a strange place Nostr is!

I only studied Euclid in college but if there were one book I could get everyone to read, it would be the Elements... So I was amused to read your response "of course" since absolutely no one studies Euclid πŸ˜‚

I don't know how that could be done without just open sourcing the content for free and soliciting donations. Purchasing digital content doesn't work without kicking it down on the platform so it can't be pirated, right? That's the reasoning anyway.

The best way would be v4v so audiobook producers could still get paid.

I did a couple audiobooks for the school I lead in that format, set up with option to stream sats.

Easter treat

I read about these books in The Marginalian newsletter last week and they arrived today.

They were written in response to the omission from a popular children's dictionary of once common words from the natural world in favor of words like "pixel" and "broadband".

Truly magnificent books.

Audible is not ideal since you don't "own" the content.... But you do get a monthly credit that can be spent as you wish. Books go on sale a lot. Most importantly, the quality of the readers is far and away better than other places I've tried. Reading aloud is truly an art form and is valuable for the listener... at least in my case!

Alleluia, Alleluia

Those who come to the tomb asking "how shall we roll away the stone?" shall be eternally gladdened by the song "he is not here, he is risen"

No smoking for one week. The patch helps.

Cigarettes are sublime. As Richard Klein wrote, "Smoking belongs to that category of action that falls in between the states of activity and passivityβ€”a somewhat embarrassed, embarrassing condition, unclean, unproductive, a mere gesture." I often quoted Matthew Schmitz as well: "If our bodies are temples, we should not fear to fill them with smoke... Still, incense is not tobacco, and I consider smoking a beautiful indulgence but an ugly habit."

A weapon against time. Pleasant beyond all measure. Yet I'm no longer free, entangled in a web of smoky tendrils. The patch has the nicotine covered; the craving is something else, something psychological or spiritual, affective--of the heart, even. Blessed are the pure of heart. It was, for me, becoming an ugly habit, tethering my attention and my gratification to itself and becoming something that clouded the eye of the heart.

So here I sit, slowly clearing the way for a better way. I may be permitted a little poetic musing to fill the gap.

"I cannot help but think that a leaf hailed by the French as une volupte nouvelle, the only pleasure unknown in ancient courts, is a fitting symbol for the advent of our Lord. We know what the ancients did not; we taste the sweet presence for which they longed. Christ is the true volupte nouvelle. To those who know him, all other pleasures seem tired and worn."
