When we had open signup, we experienced steady growth, but it was obvious to me that most new users were junk accounts rather than legit users. To keep costs down and ensure the long-term financial viability of the server, we switched to manual signup. Our growth is slower, but more new users become engaged members.

Is it a limitation from Mastodon about not being able to discover bad actors later, spam/scam profiles that just sign up and fill out profile and link to their "business" or something else entirely? :)

There are a couple of reasons for this:
- I like the sense of control
- I want to "know" the users who sign up here
- This way I'm more sure they accept the rules
- I can control the resources of the server better when I know the user number in real time
- I don't want it to grow too fast or too big
- It feels nice to welcome each and everyone myself, it's something that I like to do
- This way I can help the users better right from the start while welcoming them here, for example if people join from X/Twitter etc.
- To manage spam/scam profiles
- When the userbase is sound, I don't have to look for moderators any time soon

I think I have updated production environment with early test release maybe twice in my career, for heartbleed and spectre. And only, because we measured it to be less harmless to us have temporal unstable server for customer x a while, than have a open zero day in it

I always test thoroughly so that there is no breaking changes.
Usually I follow the cycle of mastodon.social as it has always the newest nightly in production. Check your version information, after all you are commenting from mastodon.social.
...hold that thought, 4.1.6 is not yet arrived on nightly. It's funny how the version tags always go this way around. I'm used to the thought that nightly is newer than stable. Funny.
