Zaps leave an unnecessary public record that also adds to social value because it shows enthusiasm and encourages other people to also zap.

I’ve started hearing “nostr is just a shiny toy that is distracting devs” more and more, and honestly think that’s just really, really dumb.

I don’t see the difference between saying this now and saying that lightning was distracting devs in 2017.

lightning needs bitcoin and makes it more valuable via demand pull. nostr needs lightning and makes it more valuable via demand pull. ergo (by the transitive property of “needs” and “makes more valuable”) nostr needs bitcoin and makes it more valuable. this is building in layers. this is the antithesis of crypto’s “world computer” bullshit. like, seriously, what more do you want?

not to mention that the more people who come to bitcoin, the more developer hours you end up creating.

I have absolutely zero on-the-ground info on this, but I strongly suspect that for every core contributor who first got involved in 2019 or later, lightning was a huge part of what motivated them, *even if* their actual output since then has had nothing to do with lightning directly.

open to being convinced this is all completely misguided btw. as mentioned earlier I have a lot of time today to argue …

The gist seems to be private.

Another problematic (I think?) usage of until is to query time slices using since+until deeper and deeper to get N events, instead of just using "limit". So instead of 1 request that returns all needed events we get 10-100 requests and user is waiting for the feed to 'get populated'.

Snort does that, and I was told it's hard to do it in any other way with many relays to poll. Haven't dug into that, but feels very awkward, and my rate-limiting isn't happy.

Perhaps by simply being, you are already becoming who you are meant to be.

Don't get me wrong, the nostr is great, but we really need to work on the privacy aspect of it.

We are creating so much data our message meta data, mutes, blocks, bookmarks and everything is wide open, even our IP is exposed to every relay we are connected to.

I understand that we can use VPNs for some privacy, but privacy should be built-in by design.

One more filter idea; a toggle to only show notes with zaps on the universal feed.

Yep. I was confused what happened to it.

Single one of payments are great - but they are not businesses. Business have recurring costs and need recurring income.

If we want lightning (and perhaps Nostr) to drive Bitcoin adoption and business to thrive, we need subscriptions. And Nostr is the perfect place to start adopting them in the wild.

Side note, without subscriptions you typically get huge drop off rates - basically business churn. I don’t want the business to control your finances or decisions (stop paying whenever) - but literally people forgetting to pay something monthly (if the only option) kills businesses.

If I was better across lightning, I would be focusing on subscriptions as number one priority - especially simple client app/wallet UX.

Maybe I don’t need the receipt stuff.. I would know the pubkey of the event being asked to be signed.

So I really just need to know who made each payment. Pubkey and amount. Then it’s just record keeping.

I feel like perhaps we’re being quick to try and decentralise everything and store all config, data or state in published Nostr events by default 😟

The cross app support Nostr enables is awesome - but it comes with an insane privacy cost. Worse than todays social networks. Are we building something worse?

A public following list is fine. But I want a private one too. I want private lists. I want private block lists or mutes. I want private bookmarks. I want private connected relays. And so on.

The current client app approach is basically ‘give the government a direct event feed for everything you do or have, in a nice standardise format for them to process’.

We really need to rethink the public first mindset in Nostr clients. Most data can be synced using iCloud or something that’s not public - and made public by choice by the user as needed. You can even store the data as Nostr events locally without publishing if you like that format.

Let’s not build a privacy nightmare..
