I find the above to be a fascinating view of bitcoin by age of coin.

Thanks to John Ratcliff for posting this on twitter.

It's August, not what I think of as the peak of ski season, but 'down under' it is. And not a great one. Australia - you have my sympathies...

https://www.news.com.au/travel/travel-updates/travel-stories/snow-lovers-vent-frustrations-over-snow-cover-so-bad-it-makes-me-want-to-cry/news-story/2fbf81a50536dd7f31373d93cb1490fe

Keeping my fingers crossed ski season in the NorthEast US is better. This week I start my exercising - getting ready for my ski season, only 4 months away.

Most importantly you own your keys. You own your identity.

Imagine if you'd built a following on twitter with a particular ID and then someone (Elon) decided you shouldn't have it any more.

There are not just hundreds of different cryptos, there are tens of thousands.

As part of a course I did, I created my own crypto. Never did anything with it, but it was fun to do and share with people just how trivial it is to create one.

Up until a couple years ago I thought that there might be a number of different cryptos for different use cases / industries that might be successful each in their own niche. I still think it's possible that there might be a very few unique cryptos that hang in there, but Bitcoin is the big dog that is going to dominate. Trying to pick which crypto out of all of them may survive to be a player in some far edge case has no appeal to me. I agree with Odell's philosophy "Stay humble, stack sats"

Bitcoin will not exceed 21 million because there is a formula built into the core code that creates new bitcoin (mining rewards) for each block as it gets created. It started at 50 bitcoin a block and every 210,000 blocks (about 4 years) it drops in half, so 25, then 12.5, then 6.25 (where we are now) and in mid-April 2024 it will drop to 3.125. This continues with eventually the reward dropping below below 1 full bitcoin to some number of sats and continues dropping until the reward is only 1 sat and then 0 - no mining reward at all. That is expected to occur in 2140.

Is it possible for someone to change that core code? yes, that's called a fork and then there would be two cryptos, one with the original rules and one with the new set of rules. That's happened many times in the past and will likely continue to happen. BUT, if the new rules changed the 21 million limit, the fork with the new rules would never be accepted by the very large and dedicated bitcoin community as being bitcoin - it would become some new crypto variation.

You are definitely now a pleb. Zapping and getting zapped. Welcome to the club. LOL

Thanks for sharing the RC aircraft event video!!! nostr can be such a challenge some days. I couldn't see the video on iOS Damus, nor on iris.to. Had to copy the note ID to snort.social. pays to run multiple clients I guess...

It’s not illegal to enter the US with large amounts of cash. It is illegal to do so without declaring it on the appropriate forms. Government assumes anyone with large amounts of cash is doing something illegal.

Bitcoin fixes this :)

Glad to hear you had a good day flying RC airplanes - any pictures to share? Not something I do, but I enjoy seeing what others enjoy...

Enjoy your weekend!!! My vacation ends tonight, then tomorrow for cleanup and laundry.

Monday it’s back to work. Earn some fiat to pay the mortgage and earn some sats to add to my stack…

If you want people to support you as a small dev, let us know what you are doing - perhaps you’ll get some support.

GitHub link or project web page might be. A good start. I’m a fan of FOSS and self sovereign computing.

If you are doing that you’ve got a chance for my support….

When you are ready, let me know. It’s not as hard as you think :)

Just relaxing. Enjoying the fire. RV camping has been fun, but I’m definitely not rushing out to buy one :)

I don’t like putting my private key into any old client, so I primarily use self hosted Iris on my #start9 server and #damus (without ability to use per note zaps) on iOS.

Primal and Snort and various other web clients I use from time to time on the web with getalby extension holding my private key.

I’m putting together a list of my favorite clients. I’ll probably post that with brief reviews of each in a week or two.

Great to see new folks like you jumping on NOSTR and getting all set up with lightning and more!!!

Strike.me works in the US. BUT there are three states that have state level legislation that blocks many services including Strike. These are NY Hawaii and South Dakota. Im not sure about US territories…

Looks like you are connected to 19 relays, the global feed downloading everything everyone posted to all the relays can be quite the firehouse of information.

Eventually clients will start giving more filter options, but until then you will likely find yourself encountering all sorts of scam / crazy / porn / foreign language posts.

I like seeing the wide variety, I ignore almost all the posts, but occasionally find someone worth following that otherwise I would never have found!

So can I get an address like nostr:npub1nqx3lfjxpkqhck3kgrdtkhncvffe94l7qrep6ftw49nphnmw9szqvh3quf to receive other cryptos for my posts, too? What about if I just want to be tipped $$? I don't know what I'd even do with crypto. šŸ˜‚

Exactly!!! You can get a ā€œlightning addressā€ that looks like an email address. Folks can send you bitcoin directly to that address. I like https://getalby.com. You can go there and ā€œcreate accountā€ to get started.

Often instead of a like, I’ll ā€œzapā€ (send satoshis). Satoshis are like cents to dollars, a small part of a bitcoin.

Depending on where / how you live today it may be hard to pay your bills straight from bitcoin, but that is changing. Meanwhile, you can convert bitcoin to fiat (old style government issued money) via an exchange who takes bitcoin and give you US Dollars or euros.

There are many services that can help you but availability varies by what legal jurisdiction (country) you live in. I use https://strike.me amongst many others. I haven’t used but have heard good things about https://www.bitrefill.com

NOSTR allows you to ā€˜self verify’ no need to get Elon’s permission for a blue check. If you control the internet domain you can get a verified address. I’m jessemarkowitz@yourpersonalcryptoassistant.com.

Different clients display your ā€˜verified address’ differently.

Lightning is way of sending bitcoin faster and cheaper.

Sats is short for Satoshis. It’s like cents in bitcoin. One US Dollar is equivalent to 100 cents. One Bitcoin is equivalent to 100 million Satoshis. Take a look at https://www.finder.com/satoshi-to-bitcoin-conversion-calculator

Notes is what gets posted on NOSTR. Like tweets on the service formerly known as Twitter.

Hope this helps!!!
