My retirement accounts through work pleasantly surprised me today. I don't watch them as closely as my other investments because they basically run themselves. One is profit sharing I can't contribute to but get an increasing percentage of profits each year, the other a Roth IRA. The Roth currently gets 8% of my salary with my work matching 7%.
I may actually get to retire one day and just keep bees. π My goals aren't very lofty I guess, no yacht.

The massive bee deaths have finally stopped! I'll have to wait and see if there's any long term effects or if the foragers were sprayed and died without too much contamination of the hive. I've been seeing orientation flights all day, even with the rain. Tomorrow I'm going in to reorganize the colony to make it easier to maintain a good cluster around the brood in one box and store their supplies in the other. Maybe they'll pull through.

It's been 14 years since the last book came out. George RR Martin has worked on tons of other projects besides finishing his book series. Lastly he does appear to be the picture of perfect health. I also question if he'll finish the next book, let alone the final one. There's technically two remaining...

We've also covered a lot of area in wood chips and made several strategic large piles in the backyard. The dogs, cats, and birds are all enjoying it. Our power is back on!
The first picture is from an apartment complex across town. Their covered parking collapsed on all the cars. The second is from about 1/2 mile down the road from us. The top of the pole is just dangling there.
It's unclear when electricity will be restored. Our daughter is staying with a friend who still has power.

Well shit just got real. At the end of class I found out I'm in the first shipment and there's a good chance my 3lbs package of 10,000 bees will be here March 28th. The nucleus colony of 5 frames will arrive on April 10th. I'm ready but it made me really think about things.

We just hauled thirty 1"x 6"x 8' cedar boards with my Kia Seltos roof rack. I was worried getting rid of my van would limit my hauling capacity but so far I haven't had any issues.
The boards are to construct raised garden beds. We've got big plans for our yard this year. Plus the beehives. π

I'm pretty sure everyone knew Donald Trump wasn't saving TikTok out of the goodness of his heart or to protect free speech, but here it is in writing. Instead of his heart growing three sizes like the Grinch, the dollar signs in his eyes grew by 10 sizes, like Scrooge McDuck.
Trump saving TikTok is a cash grab, and nothing more if he can figure something out. Then he'll sell his shitty Trump merchandise on the TikTok store.

I already have two welders, stick and wire, and do a little work from time to time. They were actually essential tools on our farm. I inherited them when my parents passed.
The farming/homesteading is more about growing our own food. We already buy a substantial amount from local farmers, but we'd like to be more self-sufficient. I prefer my food as fresh as possible.
It seems my life is coming to a circle instead of a fork in the road. I was born and raised on a farm and didn't leave it until I was 18. I've spent 20+ years working in a technical field in the city and living in the suburbs. Now my wife wants to start homesteading, and I get the feeling I might find peace in this. I enjoy farming. My dad owned a construction company and a farm, so I think I can manage a much smaller operation.
There's possibilities for an exciting new chapter for us.
